Scaling Piercing blow with warrior proficiency

Keeping on with my future plan of LMing a campaign of TOR with some house rules, here it goes some questions to the wise community.

As it is now, scoring a piercing blow does not scale with the proficiency of the warrior (not entirely true) and it is more a matter of luck (the outcome of the d12).

What do you think of the following house rule?

You can spend your 6s as follow:

- Do extra damage equal to your damage rating (max two times, that is max two 6s)
or
-Decrease the Edge of your weapon by 1 (max two times)
or
-Increase the Injury rating of your weapon by 1 (max two times)

The idea is to use this for PCs, but eventually it could be used by NPCs too, not sure though.

i like these.

another way to scale:
two tengwar = peircing blow

or

if your Attack roll exceeds TN by more than Edge = piecing blow

Maybe you would like to take a look at my last idea, which uses a similar premise.

The main kind of issue with all these types of house rules where a multiple decision (plus maths; even of a basic type) is placed on the players after every successful great/extraordinary attack is that such decision making s-l-o-w-s down a game and can get boring pretty quickly.

This is before even considering whether its balanced to cash in extra damage for edge reduction, etc.

Thanks, I am checking it.

Totally agree

Called Shots become more likely the more skill dice you roll. This is the scaling of "piercing blow", or disarm, or shield breaking in the rules already.

Yep. This. It does mean that only spears (and bows) can be used if you wanna get better at making piercing blows...but the weapons were balanced on this assumption, with axes high Injury making allowing this sort of thing with, say, a Fell Great Axe potentially highly unbalancing.

I agree that Called Shots become more likely the more skill dice you roll, but this only scale Piercing blows (the issue of this post) for spears and bows, and not for any of the other weapons.

Then tweek the called shot:
If you roll 1 Tengwar, then you get the weapon specific effect. If you roll 2 Tengwars, then you can freely choose between all effects:
Pierce
Disarm
Break Shield
Knockback

Cheers

I use that house rule:

-roll 1 less d6 on the attack roll, and you can roll 2d12 (and keep the best one).

(keep in mind that at my table I have no Spear of Bladorthin nor any Hobbit)
