FAMOUS WEAPONS AND ARMOUR

Companion:
Item: The War-helm of Azaghâl

Type: Helm
Craftmanship: Dwarven
Banes: n/a
Qualities:
1. Ancient Close Fitting 2. Ancient Cunning Make 3. Special (see below)

The helm was worn by King Azaghâl when he fought the dragon Glaurung in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. The helm presents the appearance of a hideous visage. If you succeed on an Awe roll, your enemy loses 1 point of hate for a normal success, 2 points for a great success, 3 points for an extraordinary success, on a "G" the foe loses a number of Hate points equal to 3 plus your Valour or Wisdom, whichever is lower.

One of my characters managed to retrieve a necklace with pearls that once belonged to Erendis, that might make for another Precious Object or Wonderous Artefact that could have plausibly ended up in the Havens or the Mountains.

Azaghâl's helm seems overpowered, although it only has a 1 in 12 chance of being better than a regular Intimidate. Maybe make it equal to (Valour + Wisdom) Hate drained on a Gandalf? Still potent against all but the most dangerous foes, but not a binary thing either.

Adjusted. I've also edited the Magical Treasure Index after I realized that the treasures of Belegost and Nogrod should include no artefacts of Westernesse (as Numenor did not arise until after the end of the First Age).

Your Pearl Necklace of Erendis might make a good addition for a treasure of CIrdan's Folk or the Dunedain. It would not work for (my versions) of Belegost or Nogrod as I have them both abandoned within the first three decades of the Second Age. Perhaps it should carry a curse reflecting the tragic story of Erendis: Maybe either the Curse of Weakness or Shadow Taint (or some original curse of your own invention).

Some day, Otaku-sempai, we will have a chat about these. At the moment, I'll say they look very good - but a slight Lore clarification:

King Azaghâl did not wear the visored helm crafted by Telchar of Nogrod at the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, he gave that helm to Maedhros in gratitude for saving his life from an Orc ambush many years before on a journey in East Beleriand. That helm bears a glorious (though perhaps tragic) history, as Maedhros passed it to his cousin Fingon, who in turn gave it to Hador. It passed down the line of Hador bearing his name, till it was taken up by the last of his house...

The war helm of Túrin Turambar - the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin - from whence Túrin took one of his many names: Gorthol meaning "Dread Helm".

The idea was that this would not be the same helm, but another much like it. Perhaps it is too similar to the legendary one of Tolkien's mythos, but according to Tolkien's writings the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains seemed to have a preference for this general style.

Wow...just reading this lore makes me want to run or play in a First Age TOR game.
I wonder if "Oaths of the Riddermark" adventures can be unofficially re-themed by us fans, and set for a group of Edain from the houses of Beor, Hador, Haleth... what would be the best time period to do this though? Before Dagor Bragollach, between that and Nírnaeth, or after?

I would think that you might want to start such a campaign before the Dagor Bragollach in order to get as much value out of it as possible.

Actually, there is a 17 (I think) year gap between Bragollach and Unnumbered Tears, which seems like the perfect amount of time to have a campaign. When things are dangerous, but not completely fallen apart. (Though adventuring after the latter battle would still be possible, see Turin.)

It seems that you have this well in-hand. Are you actually planning on running your First Age campaign (assuming you haven't already begun it)?
