There's another thread on rpg.net with someone who's just looking to get started with the game: https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?77 ... in-me-over!

So I like The Hobbit (book) and Lord of the Rings (movies), I love RPGs (I've posted a few times over on the Lone Wolf thread) and would really like to get into The One Ring.

However, I'm not a big fan of games with 'special' die or what appears to be convoluted die mechanics. Mainly because most of my gaming is done online these days and also I'm a fan of quick and simple systems over more complex ones.

From the promo stuff I've seen here I really like the feel of the game and would like to get into it. So can anyone give me a quick overview of the system?

We posted quite an extensive series of articles about The One Ring a couple of summers ago when we released the revised edition. You can find the series here, but most pertinent to your question is this overview of the mechanics and this look at the adventuring phase, which covers the various sub-systems.

TOR's "special" dice are completely unnecessary. If you can recognize an 11 or 12 on a D12, and a 6 on a D6, you're in business. That said, it's fun to play with the official dice in the way it's fun to use a character sheet with good artwork instead of a piece of graph paper.

And the dice mechanic itself is straightforward: almost every roll in the game is a d12 plus Nd6, where N is your skill. A 12 on the d12 is an autosuccess, and 6's on the d6 count as extra success (such as bonus damage, for instance). You don't roll damage separately.

An 11 on the d12 counts as zero, and sometimes means additional bad side-effects. So basically the d12 is a d10 with "succeed" and "zero" added on.

This is what puts me off lots of other games, such as the new FFG Star Wars game, in as much as a good number of these games either DO require them, or some daft chart to interpret normal dice rolls.

It is reassuring to an extent that they aren't specifically required for TOR.

Blasphemy! The Star Wars FFG dice system is amazing! :P (There also are a lot of good online die rollers that do the resolution results for you, for it, but I digress)

But, yeah, the TOR dice are super easy and you just have to know like one or two specific things.

I first took a dislike to special die when FFG got hold of the Warhammer FRP game and started messing with what was (for me at least) a more or less perfectly balanced system from 2nd Edition and completely ruined it with 3rd Edition and all their funny dice, character cards etc..

Yeah, not a fan of FFG's Star Wars because of the dice. I own it and have showed it to my gaming group and they were completely turned off by the many symbols and different dice types. People have different break points as to what they want to learn in a game and remembering what little symbols on fiddly dice mean is obviously an issue for the group of old grognards I game with! Lovely books though; up there with TOR in art/design standards.
