Just a note to all of us who are creating or modifying material for use with TOR.

For the sake of ease we're creating a single link and modifying the file downloaded by that link. I realize it is much easier to do things in this manner. But it does get a bit confusing when multiple versions are involved.

Please consider changing your signature, or the post where the original link is shown, to add in version information. Definitely include version information within the file itself (whether written into the text or added as part of the file's metadata). Without this information we're going to start getting confused in our discussions. A simple nn.nn format should suffice, or use a date (Mmm dd, YYYY).

As TOR increases in popularity, and ravaging hordes of players appear hoping to gain new material, we will end up talking about fan-made material. Only to get lost because we're all looking and talking about different versions of the same file.

Thanks for considering this idea!

PS: The internet is international. The use of a date like "4-1-2012" can be confusing for cultures where the month/day is switched. So a month as text format (Apr 1, 2012), rather than numbers, is preferred as it is less ambiguous (because "4-1-12" could be Jan 4th or Apr 1st of this year).

Done! Yes, it's a bit more work, but certainly not unreasonable to prevent confusion. Henceforth, all of my creations that are subject to change will be noted by the current version number in my signature line.

LOL!

Thanks, I appreciate the effort. But this wasn't about you per se. I've seen this issue come up many times, regarding many file types, subjects, and projects.

Some of the situations I've come across:
  • Instructions that are displayed online - but are not included in the download. Despite saying 'install carefully' and 'do not run other software while installing'. So now that you have a question in the middle of installing, what do you do?
  • README.TXT: Ohh, the hours I've spent trying to convince modders that their file should be "<project name> <version> README.TXT". Particularly the ones that don't use folders and drop there stuff willy-nilly amongst a folder filled with other things.
  • Modders that break stuff. I broke function x, but since I don't like that function you can go fly a kite, I ain't fixing things so that it works correctly!
  • Programmers that assume. Particularly with acceptable data entry parameters / bounds. Then they get offended when you point out to them that they have mistakenly assumed.

I do so as a matter of routine. Good advice, often overlooked by those who have been in publications, because it's often not published information, even tho' the filenames reflect it.

Publications, I should have mentioned the Written Word as it is particularly relevant...
  • And let us not forget, the Written Word - Articles, Publications and the Internet - exist outside of Time. No written word, regardless of how it is released or posted, is time dependent in any way. That Economics Theory paper you wrote in 1902 is still as relevant and accurate in today's economy. Right?

Everything needs a date and/or version number. Things change.
