Advancement Points (gained with the use of skills of one category) can be used to increase skills of any category (beside weapon), right?

Yes, during the session you can only earn three of them in a given Common Skill category, but afterwards you can spend them on any Common Skill you like (although I'd probably want the player to put points in a skill relevant to the adventure just past).
