So, I figured, people have had enough time to mess with the system by now(Well, most people, I'm still waiting to get my first game going) that maybe we should start an adventure idea thread.
My intent is for this to be a repository of ideas, preferably presented in just a few sentences to help other people get ideas. Anyone is free to contribute, just keep it fairly concise. ~~~~~~~~~ I don't have any to post right now myself, but I have a general technique I use. I find some song titles I like and figure out what the adventure would be that would have that for a title. So, until I get a few actual ideas I'll throw out some song titles to see if inspiration strikes. Remember Our Heart (Alexander Ebert) Ramblin' Man (Allman Brothers) Unknown Brother (Black Keys) Fell on Black Days (Soundgarden) Old Friend (Caveman) Boris The Spider (The Who) Nothing But Flowers (Talking Heads) So those are just a few. I promise once I get some of my own actual ideas I'll throw them up here. But right now I'm going to be running Tales From Wilderland to get started. I just thought This would be a nice thing to have. -------------------- I'm no Jon Hodgson, but I'm available for commissions! Visit My DeviantArt for examples and prices.

A little while ago, someone started a thread on rpg.net called 101 Things To Do In Middle-Earth. Some of the suggestions were perfect for TOR. My favourite is this one:

Excellent link! Basically what my intent is here too. And I see a few familiar names there. -------------------- I'm no Jon Hodgson, but I'm available for commissions! Visit My DeviantArt for examples and prices.

1) Whilst fishing for eels in the shallows of the Long Lake, young Enar came upon a strange little creature in his net. About eight inches long, it was to all intents and purposes an eel, except for the vestigial limbs that sprouted from it's torso.
He took it home with him to his little village at the Stair of Girion and showed it to his father. His father instructed him to kill it, as such a creature was obviously ill omened. Instead, young Enar hid it, fed it and raised it until one day the creature turned upon him and gave him a nasty bite. Enar threw the ungrateful creature into the well and promptly forgot all about it. Some years later, sheep, goats and even a child have disappeared and the village well has been poisoned. Enar wonders if the creature he threw into the well is somehow responsible. (borrowed this idea from the old English folk tale of the Lambton Worm and was inspired by a previous poster who asked the question? 'What might happen to the scavenging denizens of the Long Lake if they dined on the corrupted flesh of a dead dragon?') |

What would happen if a dark power (of similar ilk to The Gibbet King) came across the corpse of a certain dragon under Esgaroth, and decided it'd be great to take it for a spin for a while?!!!!!

Don't they use Shakespeare's plays for things like movie scripts and soap opera story-lines? I'm sure a few could be adapted to TOR adventures.
If truth be told, Tolkien himself was not averse to a bit of Shakespeare plagiarism. The death of the Lord of the Nazgul, who it was said could not be killed by any man, came at the hands of a woman and a Hobbit (Éowyn and Merry) which is similar in many ways to the prophesy of the Three Witches in Macbeth that "no man born of woman" could kill him. I was going to summarise some Shakespeare plots but this site does it perfectly: 60 Second Shakespeare -------------------- |

lol well, my idea is not so much theme songs. It's more simply take the title and extrapolate an adventure from it. When I ran a Serenity game every "Episode" was named after a song. Here's a few more: Black Horse & The Cherry Tree (KT Tunstall) Gold On The Ceiling (Black keys) A Warning to the Curious (The Coral) Smoke On The Water (Deep Purple) I Found Her In A Star (Guess Who) Long Way From Home (The Heavy) In The Moneylender's Temple (Ian Anderson) House On The Sea (iron & Wine) Girl With No Eyes (It's A Beautiful Day) Just About any Led Zeppelin Song -------------------- I'm no Jon Hodgson, but I'm available for commissions! Here is a short one, taken from a short tale which won the Gandalf Award (this is a literature award of the Literature Commision of the Spanish Tolkien Society). I would dig out the short tale tittle and author name, but I don't have the book with me.
The story is about a lesser Maia ("Maie" for a female?) who lives in the Anduin as a "river maiden" akin to Goldberry and Goldberry's mother. Basically, she's driven mad by a dark power (I can't remember if it was the Witch-king of Angmar or the power of the One Ring). The fact is she has become a killer of every Man, Elf, Dwarf or Orc who come close to the shore of her lair (like an evil ondine, luring them to the water and drowing them). And she is the responsable of the fate of Isildur himself. In the original tale, she recovers her mind with time and full of regret and despair she follows the river to the sea seeking death or forgiveness. But it could be the characters task to lift the dark spell upon her, so she can recover her mind (probably Radagast could ask them to do so), because she is causing trouble near a ford such the Carrock or near a fishing village under Radagast protection. She may have something the characters need to progress on their campaing (ancient knowledge, a magic item...). |

I have been introducing a new Orc Tribe that is rousting out the other Orcs and Goblins around the Mountains of Mirkwood. The fellowship has encountered them several times and I make reference to their heraldry EVERY time. After our last game, one of the players spent his fellowship phase researching them and finding out info.
Why are they moving north of Dul Guldur? What are they after? How many are there? The players have found hints of some artifacts or magic near the Mountains as well. They are seeing the regular upset of new baddies moving in though. Goblin and Orc tribes are seeking new areas to live in and combating more benevolent races. Some trade as become disrupted and certain items are harder to get or require experience groups to guard the merchants to destinations (trade from the Shire has essentially stopped at this point). This has been my campaign thread and ideas- you can easily see the potential of following this. It could be a powerful magic user from Dol Guldur or another threat moving the Orcs north. If so, who do the PCs go after, the cause or the effect (the Orcs).? |
