Hi all! two questions about rules....
1) When heroes succesfully ambush enemies, heroes only can try opening volleys. Can heroes without ranged weapons charge directly for a melee attack in the opening volley round? As I read, rules don't permit this. But I think this feature is not very realistic.....a hero without ranged weapon is supposed to wait for other bringing their attacks rather than immediately charge the enemy? How can I explain to my players the sense of this rule? 2) Heroes with "hardy" trait should achieve Advancement Points for succesful fatigue test? If I take rules for good it seems correct. "when a hero succeeds in an action that strongly reflects one of his traits, he may invoke the trait to ask for an AP." However, as Loremaster, I think this is an abuse. Fatigue test are a routinary action and the hardy traits would become a too powerful trait... Is my interpretation correct? anyway after my two play sessions I can see some trait more useful than other for AP purposes. Your impressions? |

Hi Rimur!
These are just my personal ideas, but I hope to be useful. 1- Combat in TOR is subject to a high degree of abstraction (and let me say that I really like it); characters setting up an ambush and equipped with ranged weapons are surely ready to shoot/throw as soon as the enemies are in optimal range. The act of shooting/throwing is a very fast one, and so it shouldn't take much time: more specifically, it shouldn't prevent the shooters to drop the bows/unsheath the swords and move along their companions in the melee that follows (as long as they are not going to linger in the rearguard and keep on shooting, of course). If your non-ranged-weapons-equipped players still complain, just encourage them to get a throwing spear or two! 2- I had the same doubt, but then decided that the key is in the trait's description: Hardy You can withstand long hours of toil and travel far without rest, or under extreme conditions. Unless the test is taken after a very taxing journey or an extremely difficult one (let's say, TN16+), I wouldn't award the AP. And I definitely wouldn't award it if the player forgets to ask for it in the first place! -------------------- Your humble servant,

I agree with the second point. My interpretation of the rules is that the action must be reasonably dramatic to qualify for AP. How dramatic perhaps depends on how things are going, and how many have been handed out already.

Regarding the first point I'd allow the use of non ranged weapons only if the nature of the ambush meant an attack at effectively point blank range was possible. For instance a character concealed behind a boulder right next to the path where he could step out and attack in one motion rather than have to close range first
