After reading and playing this game, I thought it was pretty clear that characters roll a number of success dice equal to their ranking in the appropriate skill, plus the Feat die.

But I knew that I'd read somewhere that you get a bonus die. I couldn't find it in the rules, but as I was re-reading James Brown's excellent review of the game (on his blog, I think I must have read the original on RPG.net), I found he wrote this (I've underlined the part in question):

The basic mechanic of the game is simple to
execute. To resolve any action, roll a Feat die and
a number of Success dice equal to the appropriate
skill rating, plus one bonus die (if available). To
succeed, you must equal or exceed a Target
Number. The game uses a default moderate
difficulty (TN 14) for most actions. If you roll a A
icon, it counts as a success regardless of the total.
If you roll the C, it counts as zero toward the
total. If you succeed with one Tengwar ( B ), it is a
great success. If you succeed with 2 or more
Tengwars ( B, B ), it is an extraordinary success.
All Common skills and Weapon skills have a
rating between 0 and 6. So, the higher the skill
rating, the more Success dice being rolled, and
there is a better chance for higher qualities of
success

I don't recall seeing this anywhere else. Am I missing something?

There's the Battle Roll for bonus combat dice.

I think JamesRBrown is also referring to the bonus die roll(s) you get for Journeys from successful Lore rolls and for Encounter skill rolls from successful Insight rolls (this is explained in more detail in Francesco's Preliminary Rolls document).

ie: Journey - use Lore; Combat - use Battle; Encounter - use Insight (for bonus dice)

Thanks, Robin, but I don't think I've seen that document. Is it in the TOR Resources link?

Anybody else notice that the forums don't seem to indicate one's "status" (as of yesterday they had things like "Trainee", "Manager", etc.). Those names fit with a "Cubicle"/"Office Worker" motif, I guess. But they would also likely be confusing to new folks, thinking perhaps that a regular poster was "Lead Manager" or whatever.

I wonder if they'll come up with new stages/descriptors based on number of posts?

It doesn't really say specifically on this supplementary document, but I assume that the bonus die given to another player/character (for Travel or Insight) has to be used right away (as the Battle one, as spelled out in the Combat Advantage section)?

There should be a topic on the Preliminary Rolls with additional discussion and reasoning.

As I recall, you are correct. Francesco and the Forum Members in general, expressed an interest to maintain a "one rule to bind them all" type of concept - that is, having come upon a good mechanism to do something within TOR, use the same mechanism for other aspects of the game as opposed to coming up with something completely new. Each new game mechanism added increases complexity and no one wanted TOR to become too complex rules-wise.

TBH, I'm glad they're gone as, as you said, they are misleading.
