The RAW says: "Based on the quality of the result, every successful
Battle roll grants a hero a number of bonus Success dice to use in Combat"

Does this mean I one get automatic sucess to hit or can these be used you make a success great succuess also?

The dice obtained from the Battle roll are not automatic successes to add to other actions they are just extra success dice (ie, extra d6s) that you roll when you want to use them. You can use each dice obtained in your initial Battle roll to roll as an extra dice for a combat action. You can only use each of these bonus die one at a time and you have to decide if you want to add one to your dice pool before rolling - so you can't add it as an extra roll after you see if you've passed or failed. You can even give these extra dice to other players for an action they wish to support, in other words your character would be aiding them in combat in some way.

Thanks for clearing that one up for me.

What's nice is that in Tales from Wilderland, we are given examples of how bonus Success dice can also be earned in ways outside of checking for Combat advantages during Onset of combat.

For example, in the adventure, The Crossings of Celduin, the heroes are given several options to prepare the defences for The Battle of Celduin. They can repair a tollgate, train combatants, send out scouts, and possibly collapse a bridge. Depending on their success in these tasks, they can earn bonus Success dice to use in addition to any gained at Onset of battle.

Really nice points there, James.

You know, there are quite a few rules expansions/enhancements like that throughout TfW. If not for copyright, it would be nice to collect them up as they could be presented as a supplement to the main rulebook(s). That adventure book is far more than a set of (largely excellent) scenarios and I'm sure some people don't know that's the case.

Myself included. I really did think it was just a book of adventures, so I wasn't interested as I prefer to make up my own

No the point is quite true that although the adventures are the bulk of the book - there are a myriad of examples of how new twists on existing rules, new ideas for rules, and clever samples of rules in play are scattered throughout the book.

I found myself marveled a number of times as I read the book, at just the unique or exciting ways to use certain mechanics that I hadn't yet used.

The example of gaining extra success dice for an encounter just based on player-driven clever use of pre-combat strategy and preparedness was one such nuance that can find it's way into a number of similar situations.

Excellent book, and yes, nice and myriad ways to interpret existing mechanics toward a more compelling narrative.

It took me a while to understand this, but now I'm using preparatory rolls more and more often. A character observes the guards habits before trying to sneak in? An Awareness roll gives bonus dice to the following Stealth roll. A character wants to particularly impress someone with a song, and doesn't know how? An Intuition roll gives bonus dice to the following Song roll. And so on...

Battle rolls to supplement combat.

Lore rolls for journeys.

Insight rolls for Encounters.

The RAW and Francesco's blog updates do build this theme, don't they. Like I said earlier, it would be nice to have these things colllected up so they are in one place rather than scattered around! Perhaps they will be collected, expanded, and added to, in a future rules supplement?*

* There's a hint Francesco! wink.gif

Didn't know you could share the bonus dice.

Can multiple PCs share dice with one individual?

Yes but not for the same action. The rules do state that only one bonus dice can be used per action.
