When you are in the Opening Volley phase, if a Hero hits his target will the target be able to use his Protection roll? and if its for example an Ettercop with Endurance 12 and his missed his Protection roll
and the Hero hits with a Greater success Greater Bow 7 damage and 5 points in Body 0 12 points. Will the Ettercop die or not? |

It will certainly be out of the fight (rendered senseless / disabled). As GM, you could say that it would recover given time if the players leave it alone. If they check the bodies, then it will be dead or dying.

Do you mean if a Hero manages to get the Edge score needed for opening a wound during the Opening Valley, will the target creature be able to use it's protection roll to avoid getting wounded? Well if the answer is no then the Opening Valleys would be extremely important to kill enemies. -------------------- "Morgoth!" I cried "All hope is gone but I swear revenge! Hear my oath! If there is no Piercing Blow (rolling more or equal to the Edge of the weapon to wound the enemy) there won't be any protection tests either. -------------------- "Morgoth!" I cried "All hope is gone but I swear revenge! Hear my oath! I will take part in your damned fate!"

For the enemy to die it needs both it's endurance to be zero AND a wound (or two for some creatures.) and you only roll protection tests against the piercing blows. I urge you to download the updated index for the books. It will make you learn the system 10 times faster. -------------------- "Morgoth!" I cried "All hope is gone but I swear revenge! Hear my oath! I'm pretty sure it's only trolls that need a wound and zero endurance

I think a certain creature was also requiered two wounds in "Of Leaves and Stewed Hobbit" @Khamul: Yes if it's endurance is 0 and got a wound, it dies. -------------------- "Morgoth!" I cried "All hope is gone but I swear revenge! Hear my oath! I will take part in your damned fate!"

Surely most enemies only need either a wound or to be reduced to 0 endurance. Only creatures of Great Size need both.

"Unless a special ability prevents it, a creature is knocked out of combat at the end of a round if it is reduced to zero Endurance, or is killed outright when it is wounded once." (LB 65)
Most creatures are dead as soon as they are wounded once (even if they have Endurance remaining). The only creatures that aren't killed when wounded once are those with the Great Size special ability. This includes Great Orcs, all Trolls, and the Werewolf of Mirkwood from the LB. After being wounded once, Great Size allows a creature to keep fighting until wounded a second time or until it is reduced to zero Endurance. If the creature was reduced to zero Endurance before it was wounded the first time, it could keep fighting until wounded once, then it would die.
