Do Woodmen and Beornings use runes? If yes or no, where is it stated either in game or Tolkien's work.

Thanks!

About Eowyn,
Does anyone know what her alias Dernhelm means?

She was kown as dernhelm because of her exclaimation when she realized that the rider's headgear was heavy and obscured her sight.

'Dern Helm"

Culled from Entmoot From Kirinski 57 and Wayfarer.

Do you mean runes as in writing or runes as in magical symbols?

If the later, there is no rune magic except for the Dwarves in TOR.

I meant for writing. I found something in Appendix E Part II Writing that The Men of Dale and the Rohirrim used the Cirth. IIRC the Beorning and the Woodmen are of the same stock so I guess it is possible that they could use it.

I don't think there's an explicit reference to the use of runes for the Woodmen and Beornings, but it is very likely. Unfortunately, Tolkien never gets too much into the detail of the two cultures. However, the Rohirrim (closely related to them) are said to be "wise but unlearned, writing no books but singing many songs". This might mean that writing is by no means widespread in Northmen culture, and runes were used for ceremonial purposes (see the horn of Rohan that came from the hoard of Scatha, it was scored with runes).

Thanks for your reply. That seems to hit the mark. ( no pun intended)
