If Endurance falls below your current Encumbrance rating then your character is considered Wearied and therefore ignores any results on their success dice of 1, 2, or 3. This effects all dice rolls so would impact Athletics rolls and make them harder to succeed at.

If someone was heavily encumbered then the LM could apply circumstantial modifiers to a PC's Athletics action, raising the difficulty appropriately where such encumbrance had a direct impact on the test being performed. For example, those attempting to swim across a river in heavy armour would be given a higher TN (16 or even 18) than someone wearing no armour (14). Not sure I'd add any cross-the-board penalties to Athletics rolls though as TOR handles that through its use of the Wearied mechanic. For Stealth I think I'd go with something similar - ie, just penalties of 1 to 3 on the TN for various types of armour and only where such things are immediately applicable.

Hope that helps.

FWIW I have a number of re-enactment friends who say that well fitted armour shouldn't limit manoeuvrability of the wearer. Its main effect is the weight which, when worn over time, will make the wearer weary. TOR seems to replicate that effect pretty well, though I would add in a penalty for swimming.

Further comment to this regarding swimming. A chain shirt would be fairly simple to discard in the water. Leather armour, with the straps, would be harder to remove. Fortunately, TOR doesn't have plate armour - which would basically mean a PC's death in the event of them falling in to deep water.

As a reenactor myself, I can assure you that getting out of a well-fitting mail shirt is certainly not easy. I would assume that it would be even more difficult in water. It requires a lot of shuffling and sometimes some assistance. If I fell into the water, the weight of a chain shirt would be a huge encumbrance and would create a lot of drag and tire me very easily.

Thanks, that pretty much confirms what I stated originally and Skywalker backed up - ie, apply penalties to swimming in heavy armour.

Do you guys think using Encumbrance as the TN for swimming would work? The encumbrance in my group seems to vary between 12 and 18, so the range seems good.

That's a very nice idea.

A Dwarf PC in my group has an Encumbrance of 23 which is probably why DWARVES NEVER SWIM! tongue.gif

That sounds like a great plan. I reckon this one ought to go for official approval and inclusion in the next supplement.
