So I'm about to run my boys through a sample game. And I need to straighten out a few things.

I've got fatigue tests down. But exactly how long does it take to recover fatigue?

And hope. What I see is that a fellowship point can be used to gain back a hope point. But what about the rest of the lost hope? If you're down 10 points at the end of the adventure, how do you get it back?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the game Rainman!

Ok. Fatigue from travelling is erased after the journey, after the companions take a prolonged rest at a safe place. If their Endurance score is equal to or lower than their Fatigue score before they rest, they are Weary until they can get a good night's sleep.

As far as Hope is concerned, page 106 of the Adventure's Book explains how to recover it. Hope is a depleting resource, however, so you should warn the players not to spend too many of their points early on.

Basically, the Fellowship pool is there to recover Hope. So, a player could spend one of his points, but take one from the Fellowship pool to replace it. He must have consensus from the rest of the player's to do this, however. Otherwise, he can take a point anyway, but gain a Shadow point in the process.

The other way to recover Hope is to protect your Fellowship focus. If your focus goes unharmed during a session, you can gain one point of Hope back.

Ah, so you're not supposed to spend all your hope and get it back within an adventure. Got it.

As for a good night's sleep to recover fatigue, is that something you can do while you're adventuring? I'm trying to wrap my brain around the logic behind the fatigue tests, encumbrance, and such.

Thanks for the help.

No, you can't recover Fatigue while on the road. Here ruling from Francesco's Journey Revisited:

QUOTE
Recovering from Fatigue
To recover from a Fatigue rating increase, heroes must
rest in a safe place (i.e. not “on the road”):
• For every prolonged rest taken into a reasonably
sheltered refuge, a hero reduces his Fatigue increase
by one point.
Generally, heroes cannot find a safe refuge until
they reach the end of the journey. A journey may be
considered ended when the company reaches its
intended destination, when the gameplay definitely
leaves narrative time and the players take part in a
full-fledged episode, or when some change of plan or
unexpected occurrence interrupts the journey to engage
the company in a different activity for a significant
amount of time.
• As a rule of thumb, any interruption that carries
some narrative weight or that is likely to last about
three days or more is generally considered significant
and thus to have put an end to the journey.
