Hey all, I need some help deciphering exactly what is being said about this mechanic.

Pg 171
"Improving a Weapon Skill from a Cultural Weapon Skill"

I know it tries to explain it and even give an example - but no matter how many times I read it, I still am not confident that I understand exactly what it's trying to tell me - especially the last paragraph that follows the example.

So is it saying:

You CANNOT raise the cultural weapon skill as a whole - only individual weapons within the group?

OR

You CAN raise the cultural weapon skill group as a whole - but if you do you still can't apply the Favored Weapon Skill since you can't do to a Cultural Group; so you can INSTEAD raise a single weapon within the group so as to allow use of Favored Weapon.....?

I think that would clear up most of my confusion.

Thanks.
Robert

The second of them. You can raise the cultural skill, but can't favour it. Now, if I can just find where it explains the cost of making a skill favoured I'll be sorted.

Once split, the skills must be raised separately. The split weapon skill isn't increased when the cultural skill is raised.

Hi SirKicley,
for me the lines above the XP-Chart state clearly, that you are allowed to raise a Cultural weapon skill (for the same XP than a "single" weapon),
BUT if you ever want to use one of the Cultural weapons as FAVORED, you MUST raise this SINGLE weapon individual first

So it seems, that if you learn a Cultural Weapon skill to 6, you can't use any weapon of the group as favored weapon - which I would change with a houserule.

I had taken it to mean that you could not favour the entire Cultural group of weapons with a single experience points spend, but could favour them all as individual weapons within that group if you had the experience to do so. dry.gif

Thank you all for the clarifications. Some examples would be very helpful. Allow to post what it is I think you're all saying:

I have Cultural Weapon Group "Axes 2". I want to raise my skill with the "great axe" specifically (assuming there is such a weapon) to "Great Axe 3".

I then spend XP to do this, based off the chart of raising for 2 to 3. I can now choose to make Great Axe a favored weapon. (which I have not yet found the rules on how to do yet).

Now I can use any axe at a rating of 2; or a 3 when using a great axe.

I can now decide later to raise the rest of the axe group to 3 using the same XP it cost to raise the Great Axe to 3.

Now I have ALL axes at rating of 3; AND can use the Great Axe as a Favored Weapon rating.....???

I don't see why not.

You've paid the XPs for raising great axe from 2 (current (axes) rating) to 3.

You've paid the XPs to gain favoured skill for great axe

You've now paid the XPs raising (axes) from 2 to 3.

It all seems legit.

Where does it give the costs of making a skill favoured. I've been looking for this and haven't been able to find it. Could a fresh pair of eyes, or someone who knows, please let me know where it is and put me out of my players' misery smile.gif

Don't have my books with me, but I recall you need to buy it as a Virtue (open to all cultures)

Glorfindal is correct. In the section detailing Virtues, you can choose the one of the Masteries; Expertise (found on page 124 of the Adventurer's Book) to choose a new favoured skill (either a Common skill or a Weapon skill). Masteries can be chosen by any race/calling.
