They get discussed occasionally and I love miniatures so thought I'd start a new topic for us to post any pictures of our miniatures or links to pics online that would make good miniatures for use in TOR.

Personally I'm a pretty average painter (compared to the amazing results of some people out there) so mine are made up of my own paint jobs and commissioned or bought ones. Although I'm not a big fan of RPG rules that rely on using miniatures I do like how they aid in describing and setting a scene - a picture paints a thousand words, and all that jazz...

In TOR I use my miniatures as tokens on my Stance and Travel Mats or in more traditional ways in a battle to roughly describe relative positions to opponents, etc. I try not to 'pixel bitch' when using them for this though as the physical representation is to support the gameplay and not change it into a visually based tactical skirmish or wargame. Those are fine, I just don't want that when playing TOR!

Anyway, enough verbage, here's some pics to start us off.

I bought these GW goblins as I thought they'd make excellent Mewlips due to their deformed physique:

I painted these myself and I'm *really* happy with the results. They looked fairly crappy until I used a wash. It's the first time I've used something other than a black wash (Reikland Fleshshade in this case) and it added a whole new level of shading. smile.gif

Will post some more of my own but please feel free to use this thread to link to great miniatures and/or pics of your own.

These are miniatures for my PCs in my "Fellowship of the Free" campaign...

Gilbrannon the Wood Elf
user posted image

This figure is really Legolas from the pack The Three Hunters.

Brand the Barding
user posted image

I think this is a ranger figure but I'm not sure.

Thogrim the Dwarf
user posted image

A Gimli figure. Really is gorgeously painted - not by me, obviously!

Iwgar the Woodman
user posted image

A rohirrim figure but I thought it made a passable Woodman and the player liked the pose of the miniature.

... And Wolf, his faithful hound

I did this one! tongue.gif

I picked up two GW Stone Trolls (from the Hobbit range of miniatures) to use in my "Three's Company" hobbit-only campaign. They weren't amazingly well painted or based so I added a strong wash and lots more detail/foliage to the bases. I really like the results.

Prince August had a wonderful collection of miniatures named Mithril, definitely worth a look.

But, since I'm an awful painter, I'm trying to find enough Lego figures from The lord of the rings and The hobbit's lines to use on the battlemat.
Besides, it's easier to change a bow with a sword or an axe.

Rich, I'm a huge fan of the GW LotR miniature line and find they work really great for our game as well. Many of the Dunlending minis (particularly the Dunlend Thanes) work great for player-heroes of Beorning or Woodmen cultures. The plastic Hobbit set Dwarves make good player-heroes, providing your character is outfitted in one of those 13 ways (but at least they look like individual characters, instead of stock/vanilla "I'm a dwarf warrior with an axe and shield, grrr!"

Any combination of the Hobbit goblins or the LotR goblins work great for adversaries, you just really can't go wrong with that line.

Use Boromir, or Aragorn as Bardings.

I really love the Ruins of Middle-earth/Osgiliath to give the impression of an ancient world and I tend to use those liberally over our playmat, along with some free-floating trees just to give it atmosphere.

I'm a bit more on the crunchy side of tactical play, so we do measure out movements and such, it's just what I like as I'm a wargamer as well as a role player.

You did a great job painting these Rich.

I agree that they would make some solid Mewlips.

BTW, the original post for this got buried in the Forums, but this is pretty cool:)

Mithril just announced a big vignette about Bilbo surrendering the Arkenstone to the Elvenking and Bard. It looks awesome and matches with TOR's current temporal and regional focus.

I don't think so, you have to link as far as I know. At least on this site. Save the image and load it up to a Flickr account or some such, though, assuming you have something. Even if you don't they are easy to setup and pretty useful.

Some of the adversaries we use [or will use]

The secret shadow father.

user posted image

I couldn't afford the Other World 'mewlips' but I thought these were pretty good, albeit they have weapons instead of just claws, but I liked how they looked.

user posted image

For orcs and gblins I use a lot of the 'legendary encounters' prepainted plastic figures because they're reasonably cheap and I don't have to paint them like the others. I also use Pathfinder's wolves for wargs and such

I forgot about Mithril, and look! They updated their site! It's still not the prettiest page but it's far easier to navigate now. I've got more than a few GW models but not much beyond Goblins that I can make much use off as an addition to TOR.

Well, like I said, I think I'm pretty okay but not great. Remember, though, that I haven't painted them all!

Although I did this miniature (a Saxon King) for Pendragon. It is my best work, I think, so wanted to show it off as I'm very proud of it! tongue.gif

What do you guys think it'd be a good match for in TOR? Anything? Beorn? A Beorning? A Woodman? ... I'm not sure.

I can see him as a Beorning or Woodman or even Beorn himself!

I second this, that would make for an amazing Beorn mini.

He's a bit on the grey side but maybe this is Beorn in a few years time!

And now for some creatures. I didn't paint any of these by the way.

I would use this as the Cold Drake Raenar in Tales from Wilderland but unfortunately he has wings:

user posted image

... Perhaps I could describe him with wings but they don't confer flight - maybe he was injured in a previous battle. Seems a shame to not use the figure.

... This one got damaged during delivery. I had to glue back on a couple of her legs. Let's just say, I'm not the biggest fan of spiders, so it wasn't a task I enjoyed. I still hesitate to handle this miniature. God, I'm such a wimp! biggrin.gif

Those are some great miniatures! I like the Saxon king. He would make a great Beorn. He'd also make a good Odin figure (Okay, not Middle-earth, but still); just replace the axe with a spear and add an eye patch.

It's a pleasure. I love looking at miniature pictures, personally, so it's nice to see what others have done as well.

Nice looking figures peeps. Mainly my stuff is GW just because it is what I had. My Mordor orks have also doubled as brigands etc. I am also going into 10mm using pendraken for the vast majority of stuff with copplestone figures for the heroes and main villains.

I've got a ridiculously huge collection of the 54mm Sabretooth Combat Hex miniatures which I have started using. They're pre-painted which is handy, and being plastic I'm not worried about them getting damaged. On the down side there's no spiders in there (Moria goblins will be taking on the role), but there's a load of cavalry and some warg riders which will come in handy. I've also got the impressive Balrog figure form that range - I think if the players ever see me digging him out it will be a brown trouser moment smile.gif

I'm still in two minds whether to sell the lot or not - i know some of the rarer figs can go for a few quid on ebay, I think i'm just lazy and cannot be bothered to piecemeal them out on auctions.

I've picked up the following miniatures and found the following images of them. I'd really like to replicate the colours and shading used for them. They are Game of Thrones miniatures. If I remember correctly, the first is a Wildling whereas the second is Theon Greyjoy.

I think this one makes for an excellent Beorning or Woodman:

This could be a Barding, Lake Town Merchant/Warrior, or even a prince:

These new GW miniatures of Thorin and Kili are really nice but COMPLETELY USELESS AS DWARVES due to being far too tall and lacking any kind of stocky build. They make decent humans though:

Two miniatures of Haldir but I picked them both up as I think they look different enough to be elven archers should the need arise:

Finally, for now (!), a nice miniature of Galadriel. I think she'll also be useful to depict the elf Irime from TfW's "Those Who Tarry No Longer".
