Been playing RPG's for years, but never through a forum. Do you have to be available at a certain day and time of the week?

Nope. Play-by-post, like play-by-email, is not dependent on anyone being online at a particular time. Gives you time to polish your writing, giving games more of a literary feel. (Play-by-IM/IRC and play-by-VOIP are both real-time however.)

I haven't used RPOL before, but I just signed up. Do I just click "Request Access" in the recruitment thread once I have all of my character details sorted out?

You don't have to be in a specific thread of the game forum, the Request Access link is in the header bar and only disappears when a person is accepted into the game.

Quick note: Already have archers aplenty in my original group, need close combatants. Several people have pitched Woodmen healers, you may want to pitch something different.

When you get this going i would be very interested for a play by play thread here so we could follow the adventure. if you wouldnt mind. thanks

Hmm, does that mean you're less interested in Woodmen in general, or specifically healers? The character I'm working on is a Woodman, but aside from the fact that all Woodmen start out as decent healers, I wasn't planning on focusing on it. I'll write up the pitch here in a bit.

The game is already underway and has been for a while. The prior Loremaster abandoned it, I took over, we lost a few players, and I'm just recruiting new ones. The time required to do more than summarize chapters upon their conclusion would take away from running the game, sorry. You can request lurker status over on RPOL if you want to follow the game as it unfolds.

What I have too many of: archers, healers, and Wanderers.

What I need more of: close combatants, Men, and Slayers.

My character is a close combatant (not sure if I specified that in the pitch), though he also has a bow for hunting, opening volleys, and general utility.

Is the fact that he's a Wanderer going to be a dealbreaker? I can probably make the concept work with another calling (Warden fits best).

Hey, I just thought of another character concept, though I haven't fleshed it out enough to write a pitch yet (hopefully tonight, or tomorrow at latest).

In brief, he's a self-exiled Beorning whose wife was killed by a snaga tracker while he was out on a raid against a company of orcs. He blames himself for not being there, and peaceably parts ways from Beorn's cause. He's looking for a new purpose in life, and though he starts off in a very dark place he's already starting to be "healed" by being off on his own. He wanders the night in bear-form to keep from having horrible nightmare's of his wife's death.

He'll have the slayer calling, though I'm not sure about backgrounds yet (I'm currently away from books). Definitely a close-combatant.

I see potential for interesting interactions with cheerful hobbits, or "sure of themselves in their old age" elves as he journeys across Wilderland.
