If the heroes makes good deeds within Beorns realm I guess they could achieve 1 point of Standing, but this point is for Beorns realm only, right? Then if they do good stuff together with the Woodmen of Mirkwood they will gain a point which they can benefit for within the Woomen community? Same if they get achieve good deeds in Esgaroth their standings will benefit from actions within Esgaroth and Dale...
...or do you accumilate standings which you then can use all over Rhovanion and beyond? /Khamul |

Oddly enough, standing only applies to your own culture. Wisdom and Valor are generally used for other cultures.

I wrote up something to address this and my desire for a Renown trait more in line with Pendragon. If you check out pages 14 and 15 of the additional rules pdf in my sig it may give you some ideas to use in your own game.

Crafty is right - it does only apply to the characters own standing.
I have developed a pseudo-standing increase (like standings for factions found on many MMOs). After X number of successful quests designed to help a certain culture/group, it unlocks "favors" #quests / Favor 2 / equatable to permission to use/access something 4 / Lowers TN (by 2) for all checks in 1 encounter by "invoking their prestige" with them. 8 / Permanently Increases Standing by 1 12 / Permission to be part of a major plot development, decision, or access (possible political decision). 16 / Permanently Increases Standing by 1 20 / Access to a "cultural reward" that would be for that culture only. -------------------- Robert

Cool. If you have any questions, just ask away. Just bear in mind that it doesn't allow for multiple standing but creates a new Renown trait that runs parallel to Standing and also sets the usage of Valour/Wisdom at a more personal level in interactions with others rather than the way the RAW uses the highest value in the group to set Tolerance. -------------------- 1) The Fellowship of the Free - a TOR Actual Play thread: http://cubicle7.clicdev.com/f/index.php?tr...&showtopic=3424

Standing = how respectable a citizen of your homeland you are.
Wisdom and Valour = how impressive an adventurer you are. You can never be a respectable citizen outside of your homeland; you will always be viewed as an outsider, even if everyone holds you in great regard as an adventurer. The game does not allow a character to stop being an adventurer and become a citizen of a new land. If you really wanted to allow such a transplant anywya, you would simply set your Standing to zero, and it would represent your respectability in your new homeland. Your Standard of Living changes to match your new culture. Good luck getting your hobbit to learn to be a woodman, let alone an elf or dwarf. |

I think the standing system works as is. It prevents loud players or specialised characters dominating every roleplaying encounter. Every player can feel a bit special when their characters are in their hometowns. Some players need more of a crutch than others. Standing provides this.

I agree with the replies made by James & Stormcrow on this matter. Players often do not understand that by 'adventuring' they are in fact rejecting their home culture (for whatever reason), and thus will lose Standing as a result. The key point here is that Standing is a measure of the respect shown by the common folk- the population in general!
Valour and Wisdom are the measures used by the powerful and great - I do not see a need for multiple Standings as a result, although the suggestion used in TfW for gaining Standing in Lake-town is in my view an acceptable compromise. The way a common person of X Culture sees it, Character A may be here now, but where will he/she be in six months time? What actions etc. can the Character show that they are here to stay and are committed to our culture?? Hence I make it very difficult for PC's to raise Standing - Valour and Wisdom are much easier to raise, since the powerful of any culture are more 'worldly'.
