The One Ring: Adventures over the Edge of the Wild was launched today at Gen Con and also as a PDF through DriveThruRPG and RPGNow.
To celebrate it's release we've also now 'gone live' with a dedicated Forum Area for the game, now that people can actually read and explore tyhe game. Please post your One Ring comments, ideas, questions and feedback in this Forum. I hope you love the game and have as much fun with it as we did creating it! -------------------- Angus Abranson

I like what I see so far! The adventurer's book is excellent, the customization options, the adventuring. No disappointment there!
My only gripe at the moment is the relatively few entries in the bestiary. What's in there is very good though, I was just hoping for some advanced NPC classes with unique (and NASTY) abilities :-) But that's what the campaings are for! Overall, I am very pleased. |

Thanks Angus for starting up the new forum, exciting times. A friend of mine was headed to GenCon and I told him to try to grab a copy there. So far no luck!
I guess I will (im)patiently wait for my local store to pick it up. |

If we did the rush pre-order, when should we expect the book in hand?
And should I be looking for an e-mail about my download? I see that some others seem to have it already.... -------------------- Marv / Finarvyn

Mines arrived.
In terms of PDF emails, those with RPGnow accounts need to check if they have not disabled email alerts. Many people disable them without realising. -------------------- “There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. ... Yay! Received PDF frmo RPGNow. It took three attempts to get the download to finish. It kept stalling part way, and I had to re-download. But have it at last.
Now I have a group scheduled for today at 10:00 am Pacific Time. and another group today at 7:00 pm Pacific Time. And scheduling a few more sessions between now and Sunday. I will write the first review after the first session today, and a second review after the second session today, on http://www.merp.com I will also discuss it with Michael Martinez on The Middle-earth Radio Talk Show http://www.middle-earthtalk.com Of course look forward to discussion of it all in the fora/forums and real time chatroom (IRC: irc.merp.com #merpchat or http://www.tolkienmoot.org/chat Let the gaming begin! :-) Middle-earth Role Playing CommunityMiddle-earth Radio Talk Show URL=http://www.merp.com]Middle-earth Role Playing Community[/URL] |

Hmmm. Somehow mine dropped into my "recently deleted" box, even though I don't think I saw it the first time. Oh, well. Downloading now! -------------------- Marv / Finarvyn

It will cost you a keyboard if you forget to push it away So far (only read up to page 23), it's looking good. I'm making a special effort not to skip over areas because "I know them."
Glad I didn't do that then. I very nearly did a few months ago. |

After reading thru the books briefly, the most surpising thing (for me at least) is how open and extensible the system is. I've got a handful of rule extension ideas already (I am a rules-junkie, I admit :-D), not to mention the evil NPCs and monsters with their extraordinarie combat actions...
Especially the Called Shots feature allows lot of customisation. The basic system is perfect for "normal" people, but the team I will GM for consists of some tabletop wargaming veterans, who will want extra combat options. And the called shots could be easily extended to allow those. Like "Shield bash, requires a shield, on a success the enemy counts as weary for x rounds, depending on the quality of success" and so on. Many-many possibilies to add elements to the game without modifying and bending the existing stuff. Very good system desing, that's my verdict :-) |

I was informed earlier today (Thursday) that I would have my pdf Friday. How exactly will this work, I'm assuming I'll receive an email with a link?
And if I missed out today because rpgnow.com reached their pdf limit, do you think that means I'll be able to get my pdf at midnight tonight? Well here's hoping |

I don't know which is "better". I received mine from RPGNow and am happy with it. Rpg.net is slammed from Gen Con, but I don't know that there is much difference for the two download sources. I thought the PDF's were only for the 175 pre-orders for now, guess that was an incorrect understanding?
Anyhow, I received an email saying "your PDF is ready for download", "here is the link". I had to quickly create an account on rpgnow. Then downloaded it. The PDF's are full txt searchable, with bookmarks. They do not have clickable TOC or Index references though. Also they are fully printable too. Hope that helps. |

I thought DriveThruStuff was the e-commerce operation of RPGNow, meaning they were effectively the same people. If there's a difference at all, I'd guess DriveThruStuff would be more geared up to support lots of downloads.
DriveThru are offering the PDF-only for Ł18.35 (on my UK view) -- 50% of the hard copy price. We pre-orderers who bought direct off Cubicle 7 get both for a bit less than buying both separately... I just hope I'm due my email tomorrow like Warden was told. If I had my PDF now I might not have slept tonight. As it is, I think I better had, to conserve my energy for tomorrow! I'm so jealous of you guys who have it already, especially Hawke who's already posting on the TOR forum at merp.com... --Os. -------------------- The Treasure of the House of Dathrin - Actual Play of original material in HârnMaster, 2008

I found mine in my "recently deleted" mailbox, although I don't recall ever seeing it the first time. AOL must have thought it was SPAM-mail or something. You might check your SPAM box, just in case. And I know I'm not going to sleep tonight. I'm getting too old not to sleep, but Lord of the Rings is just so ... awesome! -------------------- Marv / Finarvyn

I've read 91 pages so far. I love how simple it reads, yet it gives you so many options and ideas. The hardest thing to understand so far (it took me several reads) was the favoured Attribute score.
You have a basic Attribute score for Body, Heart, and Wits, based on your cultural choice, and then you have favoured Attribute scores for each that you have customized. These higher scores are used to enhance favoured Skills when spending Hope to bolster them. Unrelated, the rulebook says the character backgrounds are for beginning players, however, I think the 6 optional backgrounds given for each culture are excellent and I won't hesitate to use those ideas with our seasoned players. One last thing for now... [Country music beat please. Johnny Cash style.] I've been a Dungeon Master, Game Master, Narrator, Watchtower, Ringmaster, Referee, and now I am a Loremaster. I've run every game man, Oh, I've had every name... -------------------- Please visit my blog, Advancement Points: The One Ring Files, for my TOR Resources

Francesco: I've been reading the PDF versions of the TOR. You've made a great game, very true to the source material with a very elegant mechanic. Thank you!

It's not right to leave a comment like that hanging. I got my email on the morning of the 5th, and the download worked first time. The product is lovely, and I just know I'm going to fetish it a lot more once I have my physical copy. I have skimmed right through, and read a number of sections in depth. The artwork is great; I'm not decided on the typsetting yet. Much of the attitude is quite abstract, as opposed to fine detail number-crunching and bean-counting, which is going to be good for me and my group -- and more importantly, like Francesco says on Cubicle 7 TV on YouTube, it's definitely right for the Tolkien feel. (I really want to big up Jon Hodgson's contributions on there; they're a great asset!) It's a sophisticated game, but written so as to talk inexperienced gamers through everything. I think I might feel the lack of simple summaries of e.g. character creation and combat. But they'd be repetitive, adding page count without adding any further content -- and the fan community is already at work providing these things! (See e.g. Hero Skills, Attributes and Traits) Cheers! --Os. -------------------- The Treasure of the House of Dathrin - Actual Play of original material in HârnMaster, 2008
