I'm surrounded by experts and arm-chair enthusiasts, are there Ents and/or Huorns in Mirkwood? If so, can anyone point me to more info regarding the affirmative or negative?

Personally, i don't remember any references to there being any Ents in Mirkwood.
However, wouldn't it be interesting if that's where the Ent-wives were and somehow had been trapped by Sauron when he descended into Dol Guldur? Now there are only a handful left, trying to survive in the deepest darkest recesses of Mirkwood? Wow, thanks for the idea!!! ![]() -------------------- |

I got the impression that the ent-wives were in the Old Forest bordering The Shire. There's a reference early in LotR about someone seeing a tree moving.
I don't think that there'd be tree herders in Mirkwood. The place has been overrun by evil things for years. -------------------- ![]() Current EU RPG Group Games: European FG2 RPG Friday (8pm to 11pm UK time; Ultimate License) - Classic Traveller Sunday (8pm to 11pm UK time; Ultimate License) - The One Ring: Adventures over the Edge of the Wild Using Ultimate FGII and can accept unlicensed player connections on some of the games. ----------------- LOTRO - Brandywine Server Halbras - Hobbit Hunter / Jonab - Bree-folk Captain / Ardri - Dwarf Guardian / Halaberiel - Elf Hunter |

you know, i completely forgot about that reference. But come to think about it, I had always assumed that it must have meant huorns, or something similar to old man willow.

That essay is great.
There's also a nice entry on Entwives in MERP's Mirkwood. None of the Entwives seemed to flee north from the Brown Lands. However an interesting point in the essay addressed the enslavement of Entwives by Sauron, with a siting from one of Tolkein's own letters given in Entwives in the East. I had a thought that the darkening of Mirkwood could have been aided by one or more of these enslaved Entwives. Might make for an interesting yet grim adventure, needing to put down a corrupt Entwife. Would be a solemn story, helping to usher in the end of the Ents, but would help to convey the despicableness of Sauron. -------------------- Ash nazg durbatulūk...
