Hi All
Now, I know this may sound like a really stoopid question to some (all?) of you but I can't figure out how Wilderland should be pronounced. Is it Wilder as in Wild/Gene Wilder, or is it Wilder as in Bewilder/Builder, if you get my meaning? Thanks for your assistance! |

I think that might be down to a regional English (accent) thing, just depends where you are - I'd say Wilder (as in Wild) but I'm sure there are plenty who would say it the other way. Like a lot of words in English, there isn't one way to rule them more, just use the one you feel more comfortable with.
Edit: I'd say Wilderland with wild, but Wilderness the other way btw -------------------- 222 off being the Devil member |

I'd say 'WILL-der-land', in analogy to 'wilderness'.

I would think this too. Perhaps there's a recording where he mentions the name? |

Pretty much 100% sure it's pronounced how Ovid said.

From a Midlands UK perspective (as in the region Professer Tolkien was from), this. Wilderland would be the same pronunciation as wilderness. The Wilds, on the other hand are the other way, wild as in wildlife. -------------------- Current EU RPG Group Games: European FG2 RPG Friday (8pm to 11pm UK time; Ultimate License) - Classic Traveller Sunday (8pm to 11pm UK time; Ultimate License) - The One Ring: Adventures over the Edge of the Wild Using Ultimate FGII and can accept unlicensed player connections on some of the games. ----------------- LOTRO - Brandywine Server Halbras - Hobbit Hunter / Jonab - Bree-folk Captain / Ardri - Dwarf Guardian / Halaberiel - Elf Hunter |

FWIW (from my UK Hampshire/Surrey borders perspective) I'd entirely agree with Ovid and go for WILL-der-land (i.e.Wilder as in Bewilder/Builder to use your original question). As Valarian has pointed out this aligns with "WILL-der-ness" as opposed to "WILD". English is peculiar like that -------------------- |

Mostly everyone I've met and played with here in Montreal uses Ovid's Will-der-land. There may have been some second language players who started off trying WILD-er-land, but since we were speaking English they took their lead from native English speakers long ago and have changed to will-der-land. I'm not sure why it would be regional but for the record I live in north America, in Montreal, Canada to be precise, and do speak English as my first language.

Ah good, glad to see that's resolved. Here's a stumper, though: how do you pronounce Dodinas and Dinodas from "of leaves & stewed hobbit"? ;-)
I've got my own ideas, but I'm curious to hear what others think. |

I'd go with...
Doh-din-ass and Dine-oh-dass ... Purely because I like how they sound when spoken out loud more than any other option. -------------------- 1) The Fellowship of the Free - a TOR Actual Play thread: http://cubicle7.clicdev.com/f/index.php?tr...&showtopic=3424

Why Dine over Din?

Like I said, I simply prefer how it sounds for those particular names - the longer vowel in the first syllable of each name. I like hobbit names to be like that if they lend themselves to it. YMMV. -------------------- 1) The Fellowship of the Free - a TOR Actual Play thread: http://cubicle7.clicdev.com/f/index.php?tr...&showtopic=3424

Somehow "Dine" seems more appropriate for a Hobbit
