Certainly on Eagle-feathered, good idea.

I'm torn on the pursuing quarry idea... it's thematic, but it seems like some people are not liking the constant use of Hope as a limiter on these magics. I was trying to have this be more useful, so that people don't feel like they're getting burned.

I might do it anyways, it's probably easier to open things up, if a LM wants to, rather than to lock them down...

Anybody got any ideas for the fluff on Eagle-Feathered? I think it's appropriate thematically, but I'm not coming up with a quote real easily.

I looked for quotes for you. Slim pickings.

“Only an eagle could overtake them now.”
Aragorn

“But how can this slippery thing of many guises be caught, save by a feathered shaft?”
Faramir

“...eagles aren’t forks!”
Dori

“The eagle only sharpened his beak on a stone and trimmed his feathers and took no notice.”

“Where are the Eagles?”
Bilbo

“In it smote and vanished, barb, shaft and feather, so fierce was its flight.”
(Referring to Bard's Black Arrow.)

Thanks Elf! I doubt any of them are super usable, except maybe for the last one.

Zed, I really like this Lore, but I'd like to suggest doing something a little more with it.

1. Rumors Of Earth. This is good.

2. Hound's Swfitness. What if we made this a little more powerful, but only applied when the Fellowship was actively "pursuing" something, such as a band of Orcs or trying to catch captives. The spell evokes images of Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas chasing the Uruks to get Merry and Pippin back.

3. Eagle Feathered Arrow. On a successful hit, the power of the Eagle Arrow knocks any man-sized or smaller foe to the ground. They spend their next action getting back up, and arrive in close-combat one round later. (This is a good spell/attack to use on bosses or more powerful foes to delay their arrival in melee combat).

Of course, this is exactly what was being referenced... what more power were you thinking of?

So regular to-hit, but causes knock-down? It's an idea... but how does that work against larger than normal opponents?

Zed:

for 2. I'm not really sure.
for 3. Actually, I was thinking that the Eagle arrow would reduce TN and knock them down. A once per adventure phase spell that can only be used in opening volleys feels pretty limiting for the xp you have to spend on the spell. No?

Not helping. :)

How about this?
  • This Art aids one in the pursuit of a quarry. If you are undertaking a Journey to follow or find someone, you may cast this spell. Once per journey, the caster may invoke this spell in order to automatically succeed at a single task. Or, instead, the caster may invoke this spell and spend a point of Hope. In that case, all tests made on the Journey are one level easier (-2 to TN) than normal.

Well, ok. But I would imagine that the Eagle-feathered arrow could be recovered after most combats (it's lost or broken on an Eye result), so it's a once-a-combat thing, not a once-an-adventuring-phase thing.

"Thin space" or "liminal" come to mind.

By the way, zed, looking forward to the finished product. Great home brew.

Cool, thanks for the feedback! It may be a little while, secret project number one and secret project number two and not so secret project are consuming lots of time.

To say nothing of all the playing and loremastering he's got going on.
