Because of the various conditional benefits, like Swordmaster for Bardings, or Woodcrafty for Woodmen. They only apply some of the time, but shields apply all of the time (that they're carried).

Who gets a conditional protection benefit?

I'm away from my books at the moment, aren't there some magical armours that are conditional?

And dwarf wrought hauberk is what I was thinking of when I added that line, although it is not conditional per se.

Well, if it is conditional then everybody has a conditional modifier to everything. Right?

I'm afraid I don't follow you. Is this one of those 'if everyone is special, then no one is special' kinds of things?

In any case, I'm wrong about the magical armour, and Dwarf-wrought Hauberk seems to be an edge case, but I remembered a better case... Brazen Armour, where the value of the armour is conditional on the type of weapon.

Just that Dwarf-wrought Hauberk has the effect of making protection rolls Favoured. But if that counts as a "conditional bonus" then all skills, wisdom, valour, and weapons also have a conditional bonus: it's either an attribute or a favoured attribute.

Huh. Every indication is that you are right. But Norori's character sheet says to roll two Feat Dice and pick the best result when making a Protection Test. I feel like I've stepped into an alternate universe...

Or, more likely, I just fouled something up (again).

Character sheet is tweaked again. Brad should be gone and the one field that was overlapping should be fixed as well. No more changes for a day or two, chances are.

This was not meant only as conditional, where Brazen armour seems to be the only one, but also as a bonus to protection gained from another source than helmet, like a suit of Close Fitting Armour.

I like the final result. Thank you very much Zed!!

How Norori got confused for a Hobbit is beyond me. I'll fix it, if he survives.
