I do wonder if Cir Nogrod should actually be Cirith Nogrod (Nogrod Pass). Cirith seems to be the more accepted usage.

Tolkien never gave an indivual name to the ridge on the east side of the Southern Ered Luin. I like Emyn Sarn (Stoney Ridge) for it. Do you feel that it should be named?

I'm still not entirely decided on Gelion, but it'll be a while before my players venture into this area I'm guessing, so I have some time.

The Cîr in Cîr Nogrod is actually (supposed to be) "Renewed", not "Pass" -- at least working from a Sindarin dictionary and being entirely ignorant of the necessary grammar. It does seem like that range should have it's own name, doesn't it? Emyn Sarn works for me! I'll add it in.

So, you see Nogrod as having been rebuilt, is that correct? Would it be inhabited by the Dwarves who fled the Eren Luin at the end of the First Age only to have to also leave Moria after the waking of the Balrog? Was it restored after Erebor was reclaimed or do you see it being rebuilt much earlier, perhaps around TA 1981?

It's currently in the process of being rebuilt. There has probably been a small settlement of Dwarves in the area for a while; but the reconstruction of the ruins of old Nogrod are just getting underway; the name is thus quite recent, perhaps. The appearance of Durin the Last and the settlement of Aglarond has resulted in a sort of final Dwarven renaissance in Western Middle-earth. The reconquering and resettlement of Moria is another facet.

I see. I never imagined that when the Dwarves fled Khazad-dum, they all remained with Durin's Folk. I had always imagined that at least some of the Dwarves descended from Nogrod and Belegost returned to the Blue Mountains and founded new communities there. I assumed that, following the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, that was why Thrain and Thorin led their remaining people to the Blue Mountains.

I agree; I think there have been (at least) smaller Dwarf communities scattered about the mountains since about that time.

My own view is that the forest has actually grown all around Isengard, effectively isolating it from the Gap of Rohan (and thus it is no longer stategically valuable) - it is replaced militarily by Dol Baran

Thanks Robin! Yes, in my view Orthanc is now surrounded by an extension of Fangorn, and though the tower itself is still under the domain of the Kingdom, the land around it is under the watch of the Ents. It's good to see another take on it, though! I'm still sifting through all the material you've already sent me
