Thanks, Tolwen. That's pretty close to my reasoning. I didn't have an overlay, but I have done a side-by-side comparison between C. Tolkien's fold-out maps for the First and Third Ages.

One thing that bugs me about Karen Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-earth is how she got Belegost so wrong. Even taking account that she assumed a more southerly location than what is indicated in The Silmarillion, she still ended up placing it far too much to the south in the Second and Third Age. If we assume (as she did) that the Isle of Himling is equivalent to Himring in the First Age, her original placement of Belegost as south of Nogrod would put it under the Gulf of Lhûn after the Great Battle. Instead she places it in the Southern Ered Luin, beneath the eastern arm of the range. I'd just as soon keep Belegost north of her sister city as in The Sil.

You mention a general problem with that atlas. Although generally well done and pleasing to behold, it contains a number of errors such as the one you mentioned. Unless you are familiar with the topic in question and look through the original sources, you might have trouble differentiating the precise from the more tricky content in the atlas - especially as everything is presented in the same, artistically high-quality manner. Thus one can easily take all of the content at face value.
The following image has the approximate locations of Nogrod and Belegost on the map excerpt shown earlier. Nogrod is the southern red dot, Belegost the northern one. Both are located near the headwater of the river Ascar (the most northerly of Ossiriand's six rivers).
This river is also a good case that a name of geographic feature can change even for the conservative Elves if there is a strong enough reason for a re-naming: Originally it was the Ascar, but after the battle of Sarn Athrad (where so much gold from Menegroth ended up in the river) it was afterwards also called Rathlóriel.

I'm partial to Linduin, myself.

After looking at the superimposed map, I would vote for Linduin as well, even if some Noldor will call it Vingelion.

I agree with this.

Looking at the responses so far it looks like I will probably leave the name as Linduin. However, I am still keeping an open mind.

Do you mean that you would prefer to leave it unnamed as Tolkien did? We could, but that is not very satisfying from the perspective of a role-playing game.
