Cudgels, Clubs and other blunt close-combat weapons

The unique One Ring rules set invites tinkering and secondary creation. Whilst The One Ring works brilliantly as written, we provide this forum for those who want to make their own home-brewed versions of the rules. Note that none of these should be taken as 'official'.

Cudgels, Clubs and other blunt close-combat weapons

Post by Otaku-sempai » Sun Feb 28, 2016 9:48 pm

So far, the only clubs I remember seeing in TOR are oversized ones being used by Trolls. What would a normal-sized one look like wielded by a Mannish or Orkish opponent? Perhaps like this:

Cudgel
Damage: 4
Edge: 10
Injury: 12
Called Shot: -
Notes: Carries an Encumbrance rating of 1.

An unskilled wielder would have to make a Brawling attack as though using an improvised weapon.

How should Warhammers and Maces be written up?

I'll observe that adversary weapons are often inferior to similar hero weapons.

A while ago I made up a bunch of new orc weapons (I was working on a "random orc generator" so that your groups of orcs would have more variety...) and I had both "Unwieldy Club" and "Spiked Club".

A Club or Cudgel would be useable by anyone; however, an unskilled user would have to make a Brawling attack as though wielding an improvised weapon.

How did you stat those up? Spiked club or Iron-shod club could both be variations of Great club.

I think I gave the spiked club one more point of damage and Pierce for a called shot instead of...whatever basic club had.

"Unwieldly" was in there just because the pattern with Orcish weapons is to give them descriptive adjectives. "Bent Sword", "Notched Axe", etc.

Here is where I started from:

Troll Weapon: Club
Damage: 6
Edge: 10
Injury: 14
Called Shot: -
Notes: A Troll club can be anything, from a stout branch ripped from a tree, to a body part torn from a fallen enemy.

Perhaps Cudgel should retain the Edge of 10. The Great club might look like this:

Great club
Damage: 8
Edge: 10
Injury: 14
Called Shot: -*
Notes: Two-handed weapon. A Great club may be studded with spikes or shod with iron bands. Carries an Encumbrance rating of 3.

* Possibly the Great club could have a called shot of Break shield (at the Loremaster's discretion).

And now Cudgel looks like this:

Cudgel
Damage: 4
Edge: 10
Injury: 12
Called Shot: -
Notes: Carries an Encumbrance rating of 1.
