Magic for The One Ring by the1whowas, 2012

I was organizing my files and I came across this one that was posted in the original C7 forums. It was very well done, used Tolkien references, simple to understand, versatile, and in the spirit of TOR. I searched the members of the forum and it does not appear that
the1whowas is among us any longer. Unless he/she is posting under another name?
Anyhow, the work was done freely for fans of TOR, so I'll gladly share it
here once again.
Take a look. What do you like about it? What do you not like? Reasons?
Here's what I like:
- Any culture can include a magician by simply selecting a magic Background and the Magician's Calling.
- The Magician's Calling is unusual for every culture.
- Spells are organized into Spell-crafts and are considered Special abilities when they are gained.
- Spells cost a Hope point to cast, and depending on the type, may also impose Toll.
- A Wizard's staff can be gifted by a teacher and "carries" extra Hope points available to the magician.
- The magic presented does not appear to be in conflict with Cultural magic already in the core rules.

I had not seen this before.
It's an interesting approach to magic, paralleling mine in many ways. I'm not sure of some of the mechanics, but those are quibbles for the most part. Perhaps the1whowas will rejoin us some day, and we can dive deeper.

Thank you for digging this out! Apparently I missed it back in 2012

Thank you James!
I've tweaked a few things from the rules, but these seem to fit well and add nicely to the game.

Mim,
So you've used these? Cool! I'd love to hear more... I might spend some time this weekend looking at them and seeing if I feel the need to integrate any of them into my rules.
Incidentally, I seem to recall you mentioning that you've given my rules I try. If you have, a new loremaster is asking
in this thread for feedback. Of course, I'd love to see it as well, good or bad, because that's how we all get better.

Zed, I used some of his ideas (especially the idea of a new Calling: Magician) when compiling my Magic Supplement (link in my sig). I thought his best idea was to make magic a Calling. For my comments on his work see the original discussion.

Any chance someone has this set of rules? The link in the initial post is no longer valid.

Hmmm...not sure why Word of Command should incur 1 Shadow Point. Gandalf uses a Word of Command to enhance his Shutting Spell to prevent the Balrog's Counter-Spell...
'What it was I cannot guess, but I have never felt such a challenge. The counter-spell was terrible. It nearly broke me. For an instant the door left my control and began to open! I had to speak a word of Command. That proved too great a strain." - The Lord of the Rings
