Bargaining

Hello,

I wanted your opinion on handling bargaining between a PC and NPC. If I want to roll a lot of dices, I could :
  • roll PC roll insight to have advantage dices (as in journeys or fights)
  • the handle this as a kind of encounter with wathever skills (Awe, Persuade, Inspire, Courtesy, Riddle, etc), with NPC having some kind of Tolerance. The number of success indicates the level of reduction on a price
But, say I want to only make one roll. Wich skill would you use ? How would a trait or specialty like "merchant' help ?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Snow.

This probably belongs in the general discussion forum, not the house rules forum.

Persuade is the common skill that usually applies to haggling, "to convince another individual of an idea or course of action."

Having a Merchant trait would allow a character to
  • invoke an automatic action, thus getting a basic success (probably good enough for ordinary items),
  • invoke an unforeseen action, if the Loremaster were otherwise not going to allow you to even have a chance to buy or sell, or
  • request an advancement point, if the buying or selling were important enough and successful enough to earn one.

Thank you for the answer, that makes perfectly sense.

Retrospectively, I would put this post in the general discussion, but I do not think I can move a post. Sorry.

To expand on Stormcrow's answer, if the bargaining were central to the plot of your adventure I would structure it as a full encounter. If it's just an ad hoc event, e.g. a player suddenly deciding he wants to haggle with an incidental NPC, then a single Persuade roll (or invocation of a trait) might suffice.
