Crossing the Anduin

First of all, how does one cross the Anduin? River-folk. The Old Ford. What else? Beyond that, how does it factor in to travel checks?

The major crossing is at the Old Ford. According to The Hobbit, Chapter 7, Queer Lodgings, the river is also fordable several miles either north or south of the Carrock. There is a ford also far to the south, in or around the Fields of Celebrant.

The Heart of the Wild sourcebook also mentions a ford in the Upper Vales.

So, between Tolkien sources and C7 sources, there are at least 4 crossings.

You can also cross by boat. There is at least one case in Tales where this is the preferred option presented to the characters.

How does this express itself mechanically? Just ignore the river and go with 'you cross by boat'?

this is how it is solved in the escenario. You just need to have access to boats

Crossing a river isn't that hard; go for a swim. Crossing a river with your supplies is where it becomes difficult. The journey rules assume your supplies are with you.

There are no rules for how to go on a journey without supplies. I'd start by requiring daily Hunting tests, with one character fed per success; unfed characters are temporarily Weary until fed. Hunting will probably slow your rate of travel as well. Without proper clothing the difficulty of Fatigue tests should go up.

So either find someone with a boat or find a ford. I don't think there are any bridges crossing Anduin anywhere. Otherwise the river is a barrier that can't be crossed without losing all your supplies.

Or crossing with your dwarf.

Feeding only 1 character per success is a little extreme. You would need like 4-7 sucesses to feed a company! I would go for a reduction in travel speed (halve it) and have a success feed 3 members of the company. Foraging also works here, so Explore or Search could also be used here, as well as herbalism, area knowledge and the like.

Are you confusing Middle-earth with D&D?

Yeah, I was going to say. Take a dip in a roaring river in a leather mail with a sword by your side, and then we'll talk.
