Travelling Gear Encumbrance

Although I have been playing and mastering TOR for over 4 years, I read the rule books once in a while to check, whether I have "missed" a rule (my players hate, when I change rules in-game :-D )

Thus, I have a question to a previously missed rule:

On page 77, it says:
"A hero’s travelling gear includes all the typical belongings that he carries when travelling, in addition to his weapons and armour. Players only take into consideration the Encumbrance rating of their travelling gear when they are using the rules for resolving a Journey (see page 158)."

Does the latter part mean, that if you count your encumbrance (e.g. 8 for armor + 2 for weapon) you do not consider your travelling gear (thus only getting weary at 10 endurance), since you only add your travelling gear weight to your fatigue, when failing a travel role?

Regards,
Fridokind

Yes, you only add Fatigue from travelling gear Encumberance when failing a Fatigue (Travel) roll. So, in your case, the hero would have a starting Fatigue score of 10 (getting Weary at 10 Endurance). After, say, two failed Travel rolls in summer your Fatigue have risen to 10+2+2=14.

You add the Encumberance score for every failed Fatigue roll. But it's not added for failing travel roles; that's connected to hazards (but I guess you just slipped and wrote "travel role" instead of "travel roll").

Ok, thanks. This time, my players will be happy about the new rule :-D

Question about Beorning Virtue: Great Strength -
"If the total Encumbrance of your carried gear is equal to or less than 12, when you are fighting in a close combat stance, you receive a bonus of +3 to your Parry score. "

Does the travel gear count as carried?

Thank you for this great site. I am a new member, starting a campaign with friends in 2018 as a player character.

Welcome Beorn. The anser to your question is: no, it doesn’t count.

Ok :)
But why doesn't it count during a journey? Because it says carried encumbrance and not fatigue?

The rules are clear, that it counts only for failed Fatigue rules and that usually only armor + weapons make up encumbrance. And if you think about it: travelling equipment weighs a lot (at least 10 kg), thus counting it as 2 encumbrance is not really realistic ;-)

Don`t bring realism into my fiction! ... :p
However, encumbrance in this game isn`t -hard weight-. It is actually a vague concept, done beautifully in these rules I think! It could be 1 or it could be 20 and it would all be "realistic" within the content of the game, all considering how you present it or flavour it. I really like that and it makes sense to me.

And how many kg travelling gear is, will vary alot depending on who`s travelling ;)
