Which published campaign have you had the most fun running?

Post by Elroval » Fri Dec 22, 2017 9:39 am

I'm thinking of starting a new One Ring campaign in the New Year. So far, I've run several adventures from Tales from Wilderland, which took us a couple of real life years. That game is now on hiatus for various reasons, so I'm thinking of starting something new.

My question for the Lore-masters on the forum is: which of the published campaigns have you had the most fun running, and why? I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

The Darkening of Mirkwood.
It's an highly dramatic and mature campaign, with a lot of echoes from the sagas and from the Arthurian poems.

Mind you, I'm playing it with "homogeneous" fellowships (all Bardings; another one all Dwares; another composed of Heroes from the Vales of the Anduin), and I think the game benefits a lot from it. No "adventurers", but characters tied to the place, striving to help their own people survive the Darkening. I think that this fact contributes to the enjoyment of the campaign.

Wow - that sounds great. I'm a big fan of the sagas and the Arthurian myths. I've been wanting to run something with precisely that feel. In fact The Great Pendragon Campaign is one of the other things I've been considering running (for Pendragon obviously). Your description here is nudging me towards Darkening.

(By the way: I have actually played a little in Zed's DoM campaign. It was great fun, but I only got a small taste of what the campaign feels like, as I joined rather late in the day).

This sound like a fantastic approach! I love the idea of the fellowship not being 'adventurers' as such, but ordinary people with a genuine stake in what unfolds. I also like the idea of the narrower focus I imagine such a fellowship would bring. Again, it makes me think of Pendragon, where all the players play Cymric knights, which is actually one of the strengths of that game in my opinion.

While Darkening is great (and has lots of wonderful stories within), I think my favorite so far has been Tales from Wilderland.
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
