Do Advancement Points have to be used to increase skills in the same skill group category in which they were earned, or can they be used to improve any common skill?

For example, if I filled in all three pips in the Personality skill group, am I required to use those Advancement Points only in Awe, Inspire, or Persuade; or am I able to use those AP's to improve any common skill?

Nope, once you reach the Fellowship phase all of the earned Advancement points turn into 'generic' APs that you can use to raise any Common skill.
