I am totally fine with all that. I think my question really is this: it seems that the story begins with a trek to the Elvenking's home upstream on Elven Rafts. Should I not do a formal Journey for this trek with Fatigue tests and all and just narrate it in the story?

I know there is a much larger trek later on in the story when the Company has to go across Mirkwood on foot through the forest.

It's a pretty easy trek, on elf-rafts. The company presumably does not need to hunt, navigate, explore or keep watch. I would just roleplay a bit of interaction with the elfes and with Baldor and Belgo.

Yeah - it's purely narration. I mean, you could play through it if you want, but as the PCs are in no danger with their Elven escorts, and they get to rest in the Elf-King's Hall at the end so they won't be carrying any Fatigue forward, it'd be pretty pointless.
