Go West

Post by Yusei » Tue May 28, 2013 1:24 pm

Hi,

So, after much adventuring in the Wilderlands, my group is going west, towards the Shire. I'm not ready for them to reach it, so I need them to have a few adventures on the way. I'm sure I can find stuff for them, but many minds are better than one, and I'd like your suggestions on the following:

- What could happen around the High Pass, besides them meeting goblins? Maybe stuff to do with the giants? I like giants, but I can't seem to find a good adventure about them.

- I kind of need them to reach Rivendell at some point, but you don't go there uninvited. Any idea that does not involve an Elrond-ex-machina ?

And of course I welcome any idea or link regarding anything that could happen during the journey.

Meeting an injured eagle.

Finding a troll cave.

Meeting a well worn traveller and offering him the use of your fire (a ranger of the north).

A rock slide.

spotting a rare plant/herb high up on a cliff.

That should get things started.

just adding to the above poster
finding a troll cave a broken elvish heilroom that have inscription in noldo that connects the background of a player with the noldor or with the house of Elrond?
or finding an info in a goblin camp for a bold raid in the area of Rivendell (for a distruction maybe of something else maybe?)

Thanks. Those are great ideas for travel hazards. I really think we should compile potential hazards according to location and season. That could be useful. Unless it's already done :)

However, my biggest problem is that, while I have ideas for a "season arc", I can't find an interesting idea for a full adventure around the High Pass. I'd like to avoid goblin caves (been there, done that), but everything I can think about feels very cliché.

Here's an idea:

Have you run the Stewed Hobbits adventure in Tales from the Wild?

[SPOILER]
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

I wonder if you can tie in the hobbit coming over the pass from the Shire on his return to the Easterly Inn, and being harassed by the goblins en route.....

a_) A lost wagon that had to be abandoned by the hobbits during their flight. Perhaps it's now in the possession of a few wargs.

b_) Perhaps another run-in with the low-life that took the tobacco leaf from the hobbit in the mountains and left them to die by goblins hands (he the guy the PCs meet along the way during their rest one evening). Perhaps he now needs their help - he's pinned down by enemies, or has fallen into a ravine and now begs for their help with a strong sense of humility and shame. A successful encounter saves him and with the right motivational conversation during the encounter he professes a newfound respect for others, and turns over a new leaf. (the level of success deems whether this is a hollow promise or he truly intends to do so. Perhaps this foreshadows some later event of him coming to the heroes aid that costs him his life. This would then illustrate the positive impact the PCs heroism and altruism does for people in changing their course - that help would not have been available to them had they offhandedly dismissed him as not be redemptive.

c_ An encounter with a great eagle.

d_An abandoned dwarven outpost or old dwarven (or orcish) war-machine

e_evidence of an Angmarin troop movement

f_Gollum sighting. (possibly the Angmarin following Gollum - we know that Gollum is eventually captured and tortured to give the info on where The One Ring is - it's not a stretch that The Shadow is trying to find him.) Your players would understand the hidden meaning and WHY he's being followed.....but the characters how no such idea.

Hope some of this helps spark some ideas.
