I don't know if it's been suggested before, but Gandalf mentions in LOTR that Gollum had been, at some point, wandering around Woodmen settlements, and that there were legends of a ghost stealing food. I used this for a small stand alone adventure. My group was taking care of young hobbits, and the hobbits were of course the prime suspect when some fish started disappearing in a settlement.

The players immediately assumed the hobbits were responsible. Then they found hobbit-like footprints leading to the forest, so they set up a trap and planted a roast chicken. Since nobody came for the chicken, they started suspecting Gollum was back, but of course they weren't supposed to know about him. Back to the settlement, they discovered "something" had attacked the young hobbits, saying something about dirty hobbitses and bagginses, and had taken one of them in the forest with him. The rest of the adventure involves spiders, Gollum failing to negociate with a great spider, and the loremaster trying to prevent the PCs from capturing him.

Not the best adventure ever, but I figured I'd share the general idea. Hope you can use it somewhere.

I too have introduced Gollum as a "guest-appearance" sighting during the Marsh Bell; seen in the moonlight fishing as the PCs made camp near the swamp. They couldn't "see" it perfectly, they could hear it singing and talking to itself and saw that whatever it was - it was creepy and foul - not unlike the marsh dwellers they had fought earlier - but this one seemed far more sentient and clever.


The players figured it out. The characters never knew of course. When they went to investigate he was far too deft and quick in the darkness for them to follow.



I have suggested in the past using his presence only a few years after losing his precious still hunting for it.

Wicked fun! One of my favorite things about the TOR game is the chance to have Tolkien's characters make guest appearances and cameos. It can provide a fun Easter Egg for players, and give their characters a sense of rubbing shoulders with the Great and Powerful.
