Agreed. I also downloaded this map - an excellent representation.

Iirc Tolkien once explicitly stated that "Middle Earth is Europe". This would make sense as the name Middle Earth comes from Norse mythology, Midgard. The Middle Earth cycle was also in part an outgrowth of Tolkien's desire to create an "English" mythology to stand alongside the Germanic and Norse mythologies.
I hadn't realized that Mirkwood was as large as the UK. This really puts it in perspective when it is called but a small remnant of Greenwood the Great! How large that forest must have been.

Pauline Baynes' Map is my favourite:

Closely followed by the MERP maps that I spent so long poring over as a teenager:

Never seen the MERP maps all together like that before. Wish there was a higher res version.

That is a great map and I also agree I wish the resolution was higher. Maybe there is a tech savvy wizard around here who can be our map Gandalf.

Not unless we have high resolution versions of the various parts. I have the Rhudaur and Eriador parts in MERP books, but nothing more. The maps really are the only interesting part in those books, so I stopped buying them.

I agree about Pauline Baynes' maps & highly recommend them. She interviewed Tolkien in 1969 for the first one, & he added many features hitherto unknown, so it's considered mostly accurate as well as beautifully rendered. Her one for The Hobbit also rocks - you can find it on numerous websites.

All the MERP maps were put into the NW Campaign Atlas, unfortunately it is 6.4 MB!:
