I'm really curious why do so many seem to want spell slingers in Middle-Earth?

It's probably just personal preference for many of us. The books actually do contain multiple references. BTW, I (mostly) agree with what they're doing with magic in the game so far .

See, I don't really see this. From the bit of the Hobbit that I've read and the LotRs only really powerful characters (ie Bombadil, the Istari, etc.) have magic powers. There are no mention that I can remember of human hedge wizards or the like. Unless you count Sauraman mentioning human sorcerers in the movie. Certainly, there were weaponsmiths in the long past that could be considered magic users at least as far as their craft, but nothing really needing a culture in the game. I feel Tolkiens main idea of the story is that magic is quickly fading from the world, hence most of the elves and Gandalf going into the West.

There are multiple examples Beran, such as the previous post about Gandalf knowing so many spells (outside Moria; & leaving open the possibility of other spellcasters), or the Númenóreans of old, etc.

Your point about the magic largely fading by the time of ToR is also correct, however, & if anyone integrates spells into our games, the magic should be extremely rare & subtle.

At any rate, it's actually not as big a deal as some people think because C7 will likely never do it, so these are house rules that some of us like, & most people are probably perfectly happy with the RAW .

I feel as though we've derailed this thread. So, getting back to the new releases...

Dare I hope that some or all of the remaining six Nazgûl will be detailed in the 2014 books? The Witch-king seems like an obvious fit for the Rivendell book, since it will cover Angmar.

And I assume Saruman will be in the Horse-lords of Rohan book. Any chance of Gandalf? :-)

I'm not sure where I stand yet, and what I'll want in my campaign(s), but I do believe there is a middle ground between what is in the game so far and "spell slingers".

I haven't heard anybody arguing for spell slingers so far...

Agreed! This will be awesome, & let's hope they do all of the above.

In addition, I hope that Ruins of the North includes an adventure that pits the heroes against the servants of the Enemy as far northward as Carn Dûm.

Since they're (apparently) including the Barrow-downs, I hope they add a plot involving Ruffians infiltrating the Bree-land. Bill Ferny & his lot can be a blast. I don't know if they'll work on anything west of the Old Forest (IIRC, Gareth once said that he envisioned The Shire as more of a sanctuary & that may still hold for the others).

Since we're talking about our wish lists, I'd love to see them add an adventure to The Horse-lords of Rohan involving the descendants of Freca & Wulf. Perhaps Wulf's great-great (etc.) grandson slips into Freca's former stronghold at the source of the Adorn, & a chap, soon to be known as Wormtongue, visits him with an offer he can't refuse...

Gandalf says, outside the gates of Moria "I once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves, Men and Orcs." Does this imply that there are spells for every culture and not just wizards? Maybe.

Last thing I will say in this thread on the topic: I don't think Tolkien had a comprehensive, internally consistent system of magic in mind, so the evidence is going to be misleading and contradictory and could be construed to support any opinion.
