In my campaign, the awakening of the Forest Dragon was caused by the Company poking around in the Greydelve where she was sleeping. She escaped them into the forest. I do, however, like the idea of there being only one real dragon. Here's a thought based on some of the discussion for anyone in a similar situation.

A couple members of my party retired from adventuring with the intent to patrol the area in retirement in case the Forest Dragon reappeared. What about the following for an extended adventure.

1. Rumors of treasure shipments draw the party into the Narrows.
2. After investigating the treasure, the party perhaps revisit the old Watchtower and discover that Raenar is gone.
3. Some time later, in trying to discover what's happened, the party is contacted by a couple retired adventurers. They've found the Forest Dragon, or at least her corpse.

Raenar has moved his horde, but in doing so has learned of another dragon in the region. Like any apex predator, there's only room for one dragon in a region. So the party comes upon the site of a terrible battle - trees crushed, destruction all round, and the fallen dragon.

Just a quick sketch based on the discussion, but seems like a narrative that could support a series of adventuring phases.
