When is having fewer dragons available to you as an LM better than having more dragons?
When I want the presence of a dragon to have a greater impact, by being "the" dragon.
Seriously, though, I get what you are saying. And I can see the benefits of having more than one dragon. But I also like the idea of giving more weight to facing a dragon, and having it feel more "special" by having only one appear in the campaign, but having him be recurring. Just the way I am considering going about it.

Ha! Well, I'm perfectly willing to let a Wight or two soften up the Worm a bit before the company has to fight it themselves (I think you meant 'weight').

I think that sentiment has a lot going for it.
In the Hobbit, how much less impactful would Smaug have been if they had dealt with one or two other dragons on the way there?

I agree with this, although you're then back to a stimulus for Raenar to leave the watchtower if you want to use him in DoM in place of the Forest Dragon.

I think several LMC from Tales and from Heart of the Wild+Darkening of Mirkwood have been designed so that they can be fused and turned into only one.
Raenar and the Forest Dragon are one, in my opinion. Two dragons substract from the dramatic effect, instead of doubling it.
Valter the Bloody and Valdis should also be fused (although I made Valter the Bloody become the son of Viglund, and introduced the conflict between Viglund and Beorn in the adventure Kinstrife).
Even the Gibbet-King and a Nazgûl can be united in a single great enemy.
Also Lockmand, the corrupt merchant from Tales, can become Halbrech in Darkening (Treachery in the Woods).
Galia, the elven archer that wins the contest in "The Crossing of Celduin" can be transformed into Ruithiel. Her despise towards humans if any character approaches her to congratulate her for winning the contest can be fun to play. Specially when they find her in the Questing Beast.

In the ...Red corner.... all the way from the great grey mountains....RAENAR the recent winner of a great hoard and a castle, the favourite of the Orcs of Gundabad! (loud round of applause)
and the contender... all the way from the Green Woods of Mirkwood... backed by the Really Wayward Elves of Wilderland... call her Green. call her Grievous. call her Great, It's the FOREST DRAGON .
Let's witness a titanic tussle of reptilian rage tonight folks. no biting below the tail.
Tonight's top prize is the Hoard from Laketown - winner takes all.
All bets available up to the first bell: just book in with tonight's sponsors Tarquin Spider Betting - " Wagers and Webs"
Just an idea. Who would you back?

Definitely Raenar. He seemed much tougher (and more cunning and deadly) than the Forest Dragon, which has really only recently awakened.
So I'll wager 40 Treasure on Raenar, please.

Yeah. There is just one Dragon in my campaign, too.

Never thought of this. Nice.

Agree: they are one and same in my campaign.

Interesting.
I have to do something out of Halbrech in my campaign (the Heroes aren't in good terms with Thranduil, so some plots are just tales and hearsay, for them).

This is a really good idea. Especially if a Man manage to defeat her in the contest, as happened in my campaign.

I remembered that not only did I fuse Valter the Bloody with Viglar (Viglund's son), but also that Oderic was made the beloved of Aestid (Viglund's daughter, that in HotW is described as "being in love with a beorning boy"). Their forbidden love, a beorning and a viglund, was the spark that ignited the battle at the end of Kinstrife and Dark Tidings.
I feel it all fitted together very nicely, as if the same person had written all the characters, motivations and plots
.
Here's a link to a summary of that adventure when I ran it:
