Soundtrack tips for Oaths?

Post by Buscardieux » Tue Apr 17, 2018 7:50 am

How about that Oaths of the Riddermark, eh? If everything goes well, I'll be running it for a group of my friends this summer, and I've already started planning some of the non-player dependent stuff. Specifically, I'm putting together some playlists to run in the background during sessions, which I find really helps the players get into the spirit of things.

Thing is, I've run into a bit of a wall when it comes to track selection. Maybe I'm just a bit picky; I'm looking specifically for non-lyrical tracks featuring primarily bowed string instruments (violins, etc.), drums, maybe some light chimes... You know, that good old-fashioned Riddermark sound! So, I thought I'd drop by the forums, see if anyone else has any pointers or tips.

So far, I've had some luck with a few of the more somber/ominous tracks off the Bloodborne and The Witcher 3 soundtracks, which I reckon will really work well for, say, Dunharrow and the Paths of the Dead or the snow troll's lair in the first adventure. There's probably some gems in the movie soundtracks as well, though they tend to skew a bit orchestral for my tastes.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on the matter! =)

There's a whole Rohan soundtrack available from The Lord of the Rings Online, it has some really great atmospheric tracks: https://open.spotify.com/album/38ge6afmh9tGrpbBQW07jy

I'm particularly a fan of "The Entwash Vale"

I'd completely forgotten about LOTRO, thanks for the tip! And yeah, that Entwash piece is pretty ace =)

I recently found some good tracks on the Civilization VI soundtrack as well, which are more suited as town/tavern and travel ambiance as well. Pretty much everything marked as "The Medieval Era" had the instrumentation I was looking for!

You might want to check Wardruna - Runaljod album.
Wardruma made the Vikings series opening track and made a lot more beautifull sounds.
Very atmospheric Nordic -thus usefull for the Norhtmen cultural sphere and Rhohirim?

Check out the soundtracks for Centurion by Ilan Ishkari and The Eagle by Atli Örvarsson. Might be something there that fits your Riddermark theme. I use them for my own TOR campaign :)
