You're not the only one. I'd love to see them cover these subjects and more besides, but I fear that HermesSerpent probably nails it with the legal limitations. Well, we all wish otherwise, because I'd love to give C7 more of my money for these ideas.Elfcrusher wrote:"Blah blah blah....outside the C7 license...blah blah blah." Whatever. A guy's gotta dream.
What do you hope to see in future releases?

I realize that retailer preorders are a terrible gauge of what stage of production a project is or when it will ultimately be released, but ... Rivendell is up for preorder on miniaturemarket.

Copyright doesn't last forever.Mim wrote:You're not the only one. Oh, wait...it does. Every time Mickey Mouse is about to expire it gets extended by 20 years. Bastards. (Why can't they just make Mickey a trademark and GTFO?)

That is actually a good question. Does anyone know?Elfcrusher wrote:(Why can't they just make Mickey a trademark and GTFO?)

Trademark protection and copyright protection are not the same. In simple terms, put the Mickey Mouse image on a tee shirt and sell it... You need a trademark. Publish Mickey Mouse books or make Mickey Mouse cartoons, you need copyright protection.
A copyright is the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same.
A trademark is a symbol, word, or words legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product.
This is not a defense of how Disney keeps extending copyright law to keep their characters from entering the public domain. What they are doing stifles creativity. Think Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and the many stage and film productions of Shakespeare's works that recast his plays in different time periods. The film, Ricard III with Ian McKellen comes to mind. Also, Scotland, PA, a film based on Macbeth. These works are made possible because Shakespeare's plays are in the public domain.
Now back to your regularly scheduled topic concerning future TOR releases....
What do I want to see? Anything and everything. I will buy it all. I love this game.

Yes, but if Mickey Mouse were a trademark (and it probably is), wouldn't it prevent people from putting him in their own cartoons?beckett wrote: Publish Mickey Mouse books or make Mickey Mouse cartoons, you need copyright protection.

Disney's Mickey Mouse Trademark would prevent people from selling Mickey Mouse lunch boxes, tee shirts, and the like. Disney's Copyright on Mickey Mouse would prevent people from making their own Mickey Mouse cartoons.Yusei wrote:Yes, but if Mickey Mouse were a trademark (and it probably is), wouldn't it prevent people from putting him in their own cartoons?beckett wrote: Publish Mickey Mouse books or make Mickey Mouse cartoons, you need copyright protection.
Disney's Intellectual Property is protected. Period.

I couldn't very well make a cartoon starring...oh, say...the Google logo as the protagonist (with some fair use exceptions for satire/parody). So Google's trademark prevents me from using their logo as a cartoon character.beckett wrote:Disney's Mickey Mouse Trademark would prevent people from selling Mickey Mouse lunch boxes, tee shirts, and the like. I'm sure there's an interesting and useful distinction that an intelligent lawyer could explain, but it's non-obvious.
That's just patronizing.Disney's Intellectual Property is protected. Period.

I'm sure Disney's legal team knows the situation better than any of us and aren't missing something that a non-attorney would believe to be obvious.
