Acquiring new Weapon Groups

Before going into this bit, I know that the rules are pretty clear on this point, but can you please stick to me for a while.
A while ago one of my friends asked me about the possibility of playing a "weapon master" character, meaning a character that was skilled in many weapons, but master of none. We sat down and tried to figure out how to do it and realized it would be incredibly expensive in terms of XP to buy every weapon avaible, so he asked me if there was any way to buy additional weapon groups. I told him there was none. Then he observed that, during character creation a weapon group in equated to a favourite weapon skill, hence he figured that one should be able to use one of his virtues to convert a single weapon skill into a weapon group, the same way one use a virtue to shift a non-favoured skill into a favoured one.
What do you think?
It seem reasonable to me, but I would like to have others' opinions.
