Maybe Tolkien imagined Aragorn as mighty as Turin. Or Legolas as Fingolfin. But that's not how I read it. (Unless he cleverly was making First Age stories like Greek myths: considerably grown with the telling over the millennia.)

That's not completly out of question, but I think that the professor was mostly inspired by the concept of the "Ages of Man" from the Greek Mythology.

And Noldor elves had base stats that totaled 20, but their favored bonuses were +0.

It'd be a firm reminder these two races are just plain superior to normal men and normal elves.

It would also make favored skills meaningless for the Noldor.
