I was reading this other thread:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1132&hilit=Encounters+example
I didn't quite get the answer I was looking for, so thought I would start another thread.
I understand there are 2 stages to an Encounter: Introduction and Interaction.
Do failures during each of the stages count towards the Tolerance level of the Encounter? Or is it just failures rolled in the Interaction phase?
Thanks!

The way I usually work it is to have anyone that wants to roll against Lore or Insight to determine how the Person feels about the Company if they know of the Person or have observed them for a period of time (AB p164). I don't track individual failures but if everyone fails or if an Eye is rolled I would probably add a failure at this point. The Company then choose how they are going to approach the Introduction to the Person - individually or using a spokesperson. Then we go into the Introduction proper with roleplaying and using the skills as laid out on AB p165. After that the Company go through the second phase presenting arguments or statements to influence the outcome via roleplay then rolling against the appropriate skill. I might award bonuses or successes according to the roleplay but others have suggested that rolling first and roleplaying the outcome of the roll works just as well..
For a simple encounter with people on the road I do just the Introduction as it signals that this isn't an Encounter that has a high significance and suggests/directs the Company to a more productive line of thought. It might set up a future adventure arc or provide some background to the current one. I find this very reminiscent of the Dwarfs in LOTRO who come up with At Your Service all the time to echo the Dwarves in the Hobbit, it's just old-fashioned politeness.
