Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I highly appreciate this forum, the cooperative atmosphere here and the excellent amount of Tolkien related knowledge as well as many good campaign-ideas that are shared here. May I ask for some advice regarding my campaign?
I plan to send my group from Bree to the easterly inn as caravan guards of the Brandybuck brothers.
Due to limited playtime (we only play thrice a year rt) I plan to do this in one (long) session, the climax will be an ambush by orcs and goblins on the high pass, the fight at the ringfort and finally the rescue of Dinodas Brandybuck.
I plan to storytell most of the youney, except for the possible hazards and one special scene per leg that "represents the atmopsphere" of the region. These are:
- the party is surprised by bad weather at weathertop, the ranger of the group remembers a hidden shelter there with dry firewood and so on. The day after the sky is clear again and the view from weathertop is extraordinary so that the guide of the group may roll "explore" and gain bonus dice for his travel-test on the following leg.
-Near the crossing of the Mitheitel, the party will encounter a ranger holdfast (a motte and bailey and some farming cottages) guarding the region. It's an Opportunity to exchange news, to get some information about the road ahead and to experience some Dunedain hospitality (safe rest). Maybe an opportunity to meeting a young Halbarad...
- An encouter with elves from rivendell, if the encounter rolls are succesfull they'll be invited to a cheerfull dinner-party (opportunity to reduce corruption, safe rest) and accomodated in a guesthouse at the borders of rivendell (no reception by Elrond that will be reserved only for characters with a very high reputation or the Brandybuck brothers (for them with the help of Bilbos letters of recommendation)).
- the ambush on the high pass: The group will lose most of their ponies to an avalanche of rocks and ranged attacks but be able to flee to the old ringford right before sunset. From there on the plot will proceed more or less as written in TOW.
Since there will for sure occur some hazards , the planned encounters are "good" ones.
I would most heartfelt welcome any suggestions on the encounters or possible hazards.
Greetings and thanks!
