Piercing Blow but no damage: Protection Test?

Post by Rocmistro » Mon Apr 28, 2014 1:28 pm

In a Play by Post group that I'm in, my character, armed with spear, produced a piercing blow against a foe, who then mitigated all the damage by using hideous toughness.

This got me to thinking, since I techically did no damage, must he still make a protection test against my injury TN since I hit my edge?

He definitely has to. There are other instances (among them, a hazard during travel) that can get your character WOUNDED without inflicting a single point of Endurance loss: for all purposes they are, maybe oddly, two completely separate effects.

Yes. Hideous Toughness reduces Endurance loss; it cannot stop the adversary being Wounded. Endurance loss and Wounds are not linked.

As also noted in Wounds in the AB, Wounds are actually largely ignored, effects-wise, during combat; so yeah, he should be wounded even if he doesn't take an Endurance hit.

Ok cool, thanks for the quick feedback! As it turns out, the LM made a protection test anyway for me (and he succeeded with 4d armor, the bastard!) but I thought it merited a question.

But remember that most adversaries are killed outright when Wounded a single time.

Along with everyone else, I agree... definitely a Wound test, the hit happened. The foe was just tough enough to shrug it off.
