A flash like lightning and a smell of gunpowder sounds more like a firework or a flashbang grenade than a "Lightning Bolt" spell.
I have never interpreted that passage in the Hobbit as indicating Lightning. Lightning seems out of keeping with Gandalf's magics anyway.

Any TOR t-shirt ideas to show it off at GenCon?

I don't write reviews of things I've not gotten into play yet... unless they are hideous.

I am well pleased with the One Ring. Just reading the corebook reminds me of when I was 10, and I discovered Lord of the Rings during a summer visit with my grandmother in Kerrville, Texas. The local library had the old gray editions published in the U.S. with this great fold out. I'd read a couple chapters, and then fold the map out to track the Fellowship's progress toward Mordor. Some of the landscape described in Lord of the Rings reminds me a bit of the Texas Hill Country.
If only I could find a gaming group for the One Ring in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. There are none on meetup that I can find, and I have visions of hobbits grabbing their hat as an old man with a long greybeard rushes them out the door.

There is a Podcast out there(The Order 66 - FFG Star Wars), and I know at least one of the hosts lives in the Dallas area.
