Crafting in Fellowship Phases
Re: Crafting in Fellowship Phases
I really like that Whetstone/bowstring element. I can really see the idea of a superior bow that is 'flawed' through an eye despite rolling a greater or extraordinary success anyway in the crafting process and needs to regularly replace bowstrings. Theres something quite mythological/folklore-ish about that.

Aww, I got rid of that in the latest version. Check out the link in my previous post.Thig wrote:I really like that Whetstone/bowstring element. I do however agree that really good weapons be more interesting if they have a flaw. Maybe instead of removing a Boon when rolling an Eye of Sauron, a "negative Boon" is added instead.
I'm not sure if the word "Boon" is really that good, though. I'm looking for a word that describes the qualities of an item, that is more neutral, in that they can be both positive and negative. The word "Qualities" is already used for Rewards you get from Valour.

Re: Crafting in Fellowship Phases
Yeah skimming through I saw they had more than likely gone
I do think they are worth thinking about somehow, I liked the idea of succeeding in the crafting, in fact succeeding really well despite rolling that eye and yet somehow the item you craft is touched with shadow or possibly in a sense too good for it's own good and normal bow strings etc cant keep up. Plenty of precendents in myth and Tolkien for that.
You could even put the spin of it having a shadow touched quality from the crafter's shadow weakness on that eye roll if they have shadow points, coming through the crafting process to explain that negative 'quality'. Or from someone else involved in the crafting or even a buyer/someone that desires the item. Again something that features in Tolkien strongly. Perhaps the negative 'quality' could be explained or developed from that. I can see adventure hooks coming from this kind of thing too.
Negative traits or qualities might inspire various responses from people, envy or a desire to own it/take it, dislike for anyone associated with emblems engraved on it, fear invoked due to it resembling one culture or another's workmanship
It is almost like accidentily burning off a shadow point into the crafting process in an unhelpful way... Just throwing that out there
I do still like the idea of a flaw thats something thats too good and so a sword that wears out it's whetstone and thus dulls or a bow it's bowstring and there not being any hint of shadow about it too though...
You could just call the quality a distinctive feature or trait, it just happens to be in something you have crafted?
Hmmm rambling now

Ramble away! I really like to get different views on whats good and whats not. The google link should be open to comments, so it's possible to go to the document and comment specifics too.
As for different names for Boons.. how about Creation Feature? The Boons are supposed to be "Distinctive Features for Creations" anyway.
I like the idea that an Eye of Sauron adds a negative feature, and it could be based on the Shadow Weakness of the character, but only in some cases where the Creation is somehow suitable to the creator. For instance, a Warden making Maps & Lore and rolls an Eye of Sauron, gets a regular "Flaw". But a Scholar gets a "Shadow Flaw". Each Creations has one or more Callings linked to it.
