Tolls and payment

Post by Heilemann » Fri May 16, 2014 10:58 pm

Heart of the Wild notes that the Beornings have a steep toll on the Old Ford. Beyons that, guest houses require some form of payment I suspect. But I'm a little unsure what to do in terms of how the companions would pay. Just ignore it? That removes them wanting to haggle the price, at least for mechanical reasons.

Given how the Old Ford is presented in HotW, I would think that the toll is supposed to be expensive for the average Beorning, which means that the toll costs more than what a character with a martial standard of living can afford.
Now there are a lot of ways the company can go about negotiating the toll. Some rich and prosperous characters can offer to pay for others, or maybe an eminent character (standing of 2+) may want to try to use their influence, etc.

But since 1 treasure is equal to one months living cost, it doesn't seem to be granular enough for it to be usable as payment...

To me the toll is more about trade and merchant tax. Private travelers might pay a small fee but I cannot imagine Beorn is looking to price gouge simple passers bye. I imagine it more as a "pay in accordance with your means". So a frugal char pays what he can, a martial a little more, etc. etc.
