I suspect the issue is that we don't know the algorithm that a Mac uses to export from PDF to JPG and so a PC user can't set up any conversion tool to match the Mac output. The best we've done is determine the dimensions of the Mac exported JPG and matching that seems to allow a PC user to make a file that works acceptably with the app.

It's a pity that the tools aren't available to allow for a straight PDF to be used in place of a JPG file for the map.

[Edit: I suspect that the maps in pdf format sent out with the pdf version of the books have a white band around the actual map and shows crop marks to tell the printer where to cut the paper to final size. Copying the map from the actual book by any other method may have a very different boundary to the picture and even knowing the size required by the app may not be adequate unless you are sufficiently familiar with graphics tools to make appropriate adjustments to match the needs of the app.

Oh, yeah, turning the physical book into an image is guaranteed to have wonky results. I've been assuming people would use the PDF version.

The real answer is that C7 should license my software and host it themselves. I would take AP & XP for payment.

Just noticed that in doing a journey from Dale/Lake-town to the Iron Hills the app thinks that the Upper Marches are Easy terrain whereas the LM map shows it as Moderate terrain (that green shading).

Good thing nobody goes there.

Just kidding. I'll fix it.

I find that the my "best try" jpg map is at most off be half a hex, and definitely good enough to go on with. :) Using this app has also done a lot to reduce my panic levels since I've, erm, been volunteered as LM.

@emtempest, I'll tell you what I did, and still do if I'm preparing a game away from internet access, and that is copy the appropriate section from the pdf of the maps (another reason to buy from C7 or a Bits and Mortar store) and paste that into a document. I can count the hexes that the company are likely to use and pre-plan the Travel and Corruption tests as well as set up Hazards for each leg of the journey rather than doing them on the fly. That puts a lot less stress on me and I can then devote time to doing the narration and making sure it's full of flavour.

I also copy and paste creature stats and Special abilities into that document so I have it all to hand rather than fumbling for books and getting flustered. I have also copied the pictures of the creatures and printed them out on 4x6 inch photo paper and printed the stat block on the other side so I have things handy to show FTF players and and extra copy of the stats handy.

These procedures are great for con games where things are likely very stressful anyway.

I'll be giving my Dwarves in Moria scenario another run out at Indiecon this Autumn and probably Dragonmeet in December as well and preparation is important in making sure that these games provide a good impression to players who might be thinking of buying TOR.

Ok, I fixed Upper Marches difficulty, but along the way I refactored a bunch of code (after figuring out how my code works...amazing how much you forget if you don't touch a project for a month or two).

Please test and make sure it's still working correctly. :-) Thanks.

By the way, if anybody has been wanting to use this but is still having trouble with the map, PM me and I'll work with you one on one. Include what operating system you're using, and what software you're trying to use to convert the PDF.
