The English word 'beam' is derived from the German word for tree ('baum') and I suspect it originally meant that, before it was co-opted as a construction term. There's a type of tree called "hornbeam", and of course there's "Quickbeam" from LoTR.

This seems the way to go when looking for a word that keeps the original meaning. And also, knowing this meaning, I can add some flavour to the general appareance of those dwarves.

I would imagine that the Broadbeam would indicate shoulder width rather than hip.

I, too, would say that the Broadbeam Dwarves tend to be exceptionally stocky (or, at least, that that is what is implied by the name). Beam equals width.
